Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

[bottle] shared by skyview. Pours very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted barley, candi sugar, and a little alcohol. Flavor is chocolate and coffee, and is quite bittersweet. Very nice full mouthfeel, almost like an imperial stout.

bomber. Aroma: Bitter coffee, heavy roaste malt, chocolate, a bit of piney hop, and a touch of vanilla. Appearance: Dark black in color. Head was medium tan, full, and frothy with good retention. Nice lacing. Flavor: Big roasted malt with a strong coffee overtone. Chocolate and light vanilla, a touch of dark fruit. Getting a bit of piney hops again right before the finish. Finish is full of roasted malt bitterness, but also some hop bitterness. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Medium carbonation. Slight alcohol warming in rear of mouth. Strong roasted malt astringency. Overall: Pretty good. Like the heavy roasted flavors, for the most part. A little too much astringency near the finish, though. Worth a taste.

Probably one of the weirdest stouts I’ve ever tasted. Poured black with a dark brown head. Aroma was of maple syrups, pancakes, butter, chocolate and malts. Taste was a fantastic mix of syrupy pancakes, chocolate, and roasted malts. Alcohol was well hidden amongst the other flavors. Very drinkable beer, without being too heavy.

65 cl bottle, Seattle, WA. Jet black, intense burnt malt aroma with alcohol notes. Medium bodied, smooth for the strength, with a nice long subdued roasted finish.

On cask engine at Tangletown into an English pint glass. Pours a solid dark black with a very thin tannish tinted head that dissolves rather quickly about 75%. Aroma is very roasted, toasted, oaty, and hints at smoked wood. The taste on the tongue is largely made up of a creamy oat substance, coffee, chocolate and a hint of hops. I felt like I was eating oats, in a good way. Very balanced for how huge the body is. Extremely beautifully smooth on cask. Try it if it’s around! (And thanks to Sully @ Bottleworks for the label!)

Bottle from Martin’s in Mt. Laurel, NJ. Midnight black pour with faint ruby highlights. Aroma of roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate and a touch of sweet malt. Aroma carries through to the flavors with a solid foundation of roasted coffee along with toffee, dried cherries, smoke and vanilla. Smooth texture and a long finish that has a hint of pepper at the very end.

Dark colored with a minimal head. Has a nice body without being overly thick. Smooth and dry with hints of dark chocolate, oats, and a bit of coffee. The thing that catches me with this beer is that the hops are well pronounced on the back end, and they tend to dry it out a bit. If hops aren’t your thing, this isn’t for you, but I find it to be an interesting version of the style.

Pours black with a dark brown head. Subtle aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee. Nice balance of chocolate, coffee, pleasant bitterness, some lactic sweetness, and just a bit of warming alcohol. Fairly full-bodied, with a long bitter-sweet finish.
