Commercial Description:
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

Sampled at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Wednesday evening beer tasting. Picked up a 22-oz bomber from John’s Marketplace in Portland, Oregon, pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thin tan head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and off-white ring. Aroma of toasted dark malts, chocolate, some coffee, molasses and a touch of grassy hops. Taste is full bodied, very light carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, some coffee and a touch of candi sugar. Finish is semi-sweet with a mild sweet toasted dark malt and citrus bitter aftertaste that slowly disappears.

Bomber, about a year old. Poured very deep brown with thick cap of some of the darkest brown head that I’ve seen. The aroma picked up a lovely blend of darker roasted chocolates, molasses, and coffee paired with sweeter oats and cocoa.. delicately-balanced between a sweet stout and a foreign-style stout.. this had some piney hoppage, but likely much less than when it was fresh. The flavor began with piney and coffee bitterness along with sour, almost oaky notes rolling over the tongue.. dry, dark, roasted coffee at the core with lesser notes of molasses, soy, and dark chocolates.. the back-end found some caramel, which joined in nicely.. excellent components and flow! Medium-bodied with lower carbonation and a bit of an oily texture on the palate.. piney bitterness, caramel, and slight coffee just stick on the finish. This was an extremely pleasant surprise!

Poured black with a gold rim and thin tan head. The aroma was of sweet coffee and roasted malt. In the background laid some chocolate. The flavor however started with chocolate. Coffee was found in the middle and the finish was mostly roasted malt. Sweet middle and a medium body.

Thanks to TheBungyo for the trade. Surprisingly smooth and balanced stout. Neither on sweet nor bitter side, thick mouthfeel and not overally creamy. The little I allowed my office mates to drink they loved, and one hates stouts! A tad oatmeal matter. Very good, black with lots of lace and creamy, obviously quite fresh. And not too roasty either.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev - blankboy’s bottle. Thick, black pour, average brown creamy head - that’s what a stout should look like (4.5). Aroma of nut oil, chocolate malt, lactic and mildly hoppy - really rich, the oats impart a mild sweetness. Taste is very roasty, nut oils, chocolate and coffee grounds, bitter hops - smooth, but pretty bitter. Thick body, creamy and acidic, dark and bitter - maybe a little too bitter, but very well done!

Tasted at the April Northern California Beer Tasting. This foreign stout pours a deep black color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized tan head. Aroma is chocolate and coffee with some wood. A medium bodied stout. The malts are chocolate and burnt malts. The hops are earthy. There is a fairly pronounced ashiness to this beer, which sort of detracts from the other flavors. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is crisp and clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and a touch of ash.

Bottle. Black body, creamy chocolate head. Muted roast, very muted dark chocolate in aroma. Very dry bitter roast flavour with mild malt in the middle is a bit one dimensional. Average to medium palate. Solid, but lacks transendence. Thanks Larry Pitonka.

Bottle. Thanks to BrianK for the share sometime ago. Pours a dark brown body with a creamy 2 finger h ead. Roasted coffee, chocolate, slightly bitter and silky. Some hop presence in good balance (a faint appearance if you will).
