4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Why this is not a top 20 beer I dont know. Big dark beer that has a nice thick but not sludge like body. Deep, rich roasted flavors that still have a hoppiness coming through that is not hops for the sake of hops. Excellent balance in all aspects. Couldnt recommend this beer more. Thanks to LarryP(Andre) for this beauty.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Khyber Pass. Opaque brown pour with a foamy tan ring. Equal parts chocolate, coffee, liquorice and smoke. Fairly earthy. Tobacco. Truffles. Burnt chocolate. Medium body with a silky sweet finish. There is a nice spicy brightness here that not present in most stouts but ultimately things fall flat for me in comparing it to the so many better stouts this beer is trying to be.

650ml bottle from Stewarts Wine Company. Rating from May 2014. Everything about this beer is good from the dense black colour and strong malty chocolate aromas to the long burnt bitter finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle thanks to my wife! Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges slowly. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with some dark grains, a touch of pine and a bit of dryness. Flavor has a creamy dark grain note with some roasted malts and a bit of pine dryness towards the finish.

Elysian does it again. Thick and dark, like if Guinness were good in looks and taste. Like fruity oatmeal.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Transfer from BA review on 5-13-12 -
Poured from 22 bomber into chalice glass
Appearance – Pours a nearly pitch black color with a one finger brownish head. The head faded over a moderate amount of time to leave a nice level of lacing.
Smell – A dark chocolate and oat aroma are the biggest. These are mixed with a light amount of caramel sweetness and some dark bready aromas as well as a decent hit of hoppy aromas.
Taste – Up front the taste is of roasted malt with flavors of dark bread and oats mixed with notes of chocolate and caramel. While not very sweet at first, the taste gets even less sweet as the taste goes on. The caramel quickly fades with the roasted flavors intensifying. There is an earthy hoppiness that mixes in with the roastiness. At the end there is a heavy roasted coffee flavor that takes over the taste. This flavor leaves quite a bitter flavor on the tongue in the end.
Mouthfeel – An average thickness with a slightly above average carbonation level.
Overall - In many ways this beer drinks more like a lighter hopped black IPA. It’s dryness and bitterness are quite heavy. I was expecting something a bit more smooth in transition and flavor, but this it was not. It left some rather unpleasant flavors in the mouth at the end making this a beer I would likely not do again.
