COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A smooth and sturdy stout, made with 10% rolled oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt. The name is referential to the founders of Thebes, warriors who sprang from the earth when the teeth of a slain dragon were sown by Cadmus. Bittered with Chinook; finished with Cascade and Columbus hops.

The aroma is fantastic: coffee, malt, and roasted sugars pour up your nose. The beer itself is strong and sweet, almost cloying in it’s potency. A good pour, although you must have a sweet tooth to fully appreciate this one.

Pours a black color with a thick, creamy brown stout. Smells of chocolate and some coffee. Tastes like some chocolate. Some carbonation in the taste as well. Burnt coffee taste in the aftertaste.

Black in the glass with a brown head, nice duration and lace. The aroma is sweet matly with notes of roasted malt and light notes of coffee, and creamy chocolate. The flavor is sweet malty and very roasted combined with notes of chocolate, dairy creamer, faint tones of coffee, leading to a dry roasted, bitter, and burnt finish. The texture was a little oily though.

Black pour, low carbonation and head, nice roasty, malty, yeasty, bready aroma. Relatively light, smooth flavor of chocolate, coffee and roasted barely, but it’s a relatively smooth flavor. Finishes moderately bitter, but not aggressively so. Easy to drink; a good stout that I would definitely try again.

On tap at the Capitol Hill Brewpub (Pike St.) in Seattle, WA. Pours black with a light khaki head. Aroma of dark roasted coffee and even darker chocolate. The flavor is rich dark chocolate and slightly bitter espresso. Medium bodied. A good stout.

Thick head. Roasted malt and semi-sweat chocolate. Medium body, nice carbonation. Very balanced and gulpable. Just enough of a bitter bite in the aftertaste.

Had this beer back in February of 2011. Reviewed from notes. Pours a deep pitch black, with a small, goopy tan head. Nice lace left behind. Nose is woodsy with damp trail, some faint chocolate, and alcohol. Not bad. The mouth starts out quite creamy, but doesn’t finish well. Thins out considerably. For a big stout such as this, the mouth needs to hold its ground. This one does not. The thinness carries over to the flavor as well. Weak flavors of mild roast, alcohol, and chilled old coffee. Meh. This one was alright. Nothing that would cause me to seek this out again, maybe on tap if I ever saw it. But most likely pass on this one in the future.

Appearance: creamy pour, deep brown with a one-finger chocolate milk-looking head, and small lace rings. Aroma: oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, with gentle wafting notes of fresh cut pine branches, grapefruit, coffee, vanilla, and cream. Taste: big notes of bittersweet chocolate, roasty bitter malts, a bit of coffee, a hint of dark fruit (plum?), pine, resin, and some nuttiness. Finish: smooth and nicely dry, with the piney hops not overpowering, but certainly rising to the top over the very dark chocolate flavors. Notes: Great stout. Hoppier than some, with a rich, creamy palate. Me likey.

22 oz. Bottle. A tasty stout, I’m happy to finally get in Pittsburgh! Black pour with a tan head, half inch, with stay power. The aroma was a veggie, roasted, coffee, oat. The thick bodied, creamy palate had a fizzy finish, and the taste was a complex blend; bitter, roasted malt, rich coffee aftertaste with hints of chocolate as it warmed. Delicious!
