Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Itís a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that itís built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that itís bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itíll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whoís counting), but what it mainly knows is that itís a great beer.

Sample at the Pike Street location (as "Savant IPA"). Pours a clear pale amber color with a medium bone white head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, hops and caramel malt. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, grapefruit and sweet malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering citrus hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Long overdue to try this local. Pours a slightly murky golden color, moderate head, and a pretty big hoppy aroma with nice pineapple notes. Taste is moderately bitter with some nice hop complexity working in there along with a tasty malt backbone. Bigger and more complex beer than the 6.3 abv would suggest, which I always like. A nice local surprise that I should have tried long ago. Will definitely be coming back to this one.

Good sized light beige head of fine bubbles. Lots of sweet malts in the aroma with some caramel, mild smoke???, some oranges and pine. Color is a cloudy dark orange. Flavor is mostly malts backed up with some nice lemon and grapefruit hoppiness. Balanced pretty well and not overpowering with the bitterness. Finishes malty with a lingering bitterness. This is a very well rounded IPA.

22oz bomber from Spirits Lacey. Poured an unattractive cloudy orangey/amber body with a frothy large bubble mostly white head. Aroma is interesting, dank overall with notes of rotting oranges, wet pine needles, cat piss, bad raisin bread dough, old grapefruits. Flavor of rotting flowers, cat piss, bad citrus, dough. Full bodied that is super creamy with an avergae duration on the aftertaste. Solid beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear and bright copper body with a one finger fizzy off-white head that left some delicate lacing. The nose is a bit of a let down, itís a little overly dominant on the caramel malt, obscuring the hops too much. The Nelson seems to have a bit of trouble standing up to the malt profile and the crystal malt specifically. The flavor is along those same lines, too sweet and full of caramel to let the hops shine. Just a light bitterness on the back end. Medium bodied with too much clingy sweetness and soft carbonation. Pretty darn far down on my list of Nelson beers. I dislike sweet IPAs, they donít make sense to me.

Bottle @ home picked up at Wilburís Foco. This beer is now named Savant IPA, so that should be aliased here. Pours a hazy, bright, deep reddish orange appearance with a cream colored head. Fruity, grapefruity, white grape, citrusy, somewhat spicy, fairly potent hoppy, light ganja aroma. Quite spicy and floral hoppy, somewhat piney, big grapefruity hoppy, mildly sweet malty flavor with some herbal, bitterness on the finish. Another solid Elysian IPA, though I donít think I enjoy it as much as some of their others.

Definite passion fruit aroma, then full hoppy bitterness in the middle. Excellent, everything I hope for in an IPA.

Thanks to my soon to be excoworker anggrec for this one. Nice English style with a malty sweet aroma with caramel, grass and bread. The flavor starts that way and then the hops come in. Peppery dry with pine and citrus and a bit of fruit. Another winner from Elysian.

No bottling information, but first to rate!
Appearance: The body is a cloudy iced tea color with no visibility even through to the center. The light tan head is sizable, not very tall, but not thin, becoming a mess as it dissipates into a spotty coating with lots of lacing.
Aroma: The aroma is very fruity and leans a bit sweet, oranges dominate with a tropical aroma underlying of pineapple. The aroma hints at a slight bitterness, but overall seems mellow.
Taste: Hop bitterness greets the tongue right away providing a moderately bitter base of grapefruit. Some malts balance out the hops nicely with some tropical overtones of pineapple. The bitterness outpaces the malts by a little, but itís very drinkable, very enjoyable. One of the better IPAs Iíve had in a while.
Palate: Medium bodied, slightly oily texture with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is a really good IPA. I like the amount of bitterness and the slightly tropical vibe works well here. I donít know if I would buy this again, but I think it is worth trying.
