Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows It’s a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that it’s built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that it’s bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that it’ll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone who’s counting), but what it mainly knows is that it’s a great beer.

Very good look, lots of lace, copper color. Gray amount of head. Lots of citrus, tropical fruits and some pine. Flavor is much of the same with a solid malt backbone providing the sweetness to balance the hops. Michel it’s a medium, with soft carbonation that gives the beer a nice feel. Very drinkable, a solid offering from elysian.

Poured a hazy amber, with an off white head. Smells of mango, grapefruit, citrus, and a hint of caramel. Taste is very simple, pretty smooth, with a medium bitter finish. Kind of watery mouthfeel, but very drinkable. Not bad.

Draft. Copper pour, beige head, some retention/little lace. Aroma of melon, citrus hops, caramel malt. Taste is quite bitter, melon/citrus hops, lightly catty, light toast, caramel malt. Palate is oily, average carbonation, bitter finish.

Hazy copper pour with a one finger white head. Big juicy tropical fruit and melon in the nose with super clean low alpha bitterness. Medium body with a very quenching palate and fruity finish. I love this hop.

Bomber. Pours clear deep copper with 3-finger creamy off-white head and copious lace. Looks great. Nose is that great citric feety passion fruity Nelson Sauvin hop, some caramel malt. Tastes very resiny, bitter, and with the characteristic NS hop flavor, with caramel malt, and finishing resiny notes. A lot of late passion fruit.

22 oz bottle. Misty amber orange with lacy white froth. Nose is candi, pine and orange with hints of cat and musk. Resiny medium body with a biting tang. Taste is citrus pith, brief caramel and grapefruit, getting metallic. Mostly dry and bitter; good but missing that extra something to make it stand out.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, Nelson Sauvins, malt, fruit, light pine, citrus, passion fruit, orange, and some resin. Poured copper/orange in color with a small to medium-sized, creamy, dense, rocky, off-white/tan head that greatly diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer. Clear/cloudy. Sparkling. Full of small, large, and huge-sized particles throughout. Very good lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and medium to heavily bitter. Tastes of malt, hops, Nelson Sauvins, orange, citrus, and some resin. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Slightly sweet, medium to heavily bitter, hop, Nelson Sauvin, citrus, orange, resin, slight wood finish is dry.

Cloudy, copper in color. Thick creamy white head. Good lacing. The aroma smells like citrus and pine trees. There is complexity in the aroma. Medium bitterness. Thin texture with medium carbonation. Aftertaste sticks with you well after the initial drink. Very smooth IPA and very sessionable.
