Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Itís a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that itís built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that itís bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itíll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whoís counting), but what it mainly knows is that itís a great beer.

On tap at Old Line Bistro in Beltsville MD. Pours amber and has quite potent hops aroma. Taste is quite citrusy and bitter. Delicious and knocks you on your butt if an empty stomach. Good IPA.

Nice hop aroma on the nose. Very dominant hop mouthful, with a subtle malt after tone. The palate lingers with the hops more than anything. Solid ipa.

Bottle. Pours a mostly clear amber color with a moderate off white head on there. Nicely hoppy nose with some grass and floral notes along with a hint of citrus. Taste is bitter, but feels heavy and stronger than it actually is.

Pours a clear amber color with minimal head. Aroma of fruit, caramel, but in the milder side. Taste was on the tropical fruit side, begins sweet, but then ends with a nice hop bitterness. Iíve enjoyed the few Elysian beers that Iíve gotten to try and you can add this one on there as well. Solid beer and awesome label (they make some really cool labels on their beers).

From bomber. Pours a beautiful clear dark honey color with a medium thickness dense foamy head and lots of lacing. Aroma of tropical fruits. Bitter taste. Thereís some fruity malty character, but the bitterness of the hops dominates. Bitter finish.

Bomber. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. A big fruity nose, caramel, some watermelon. The flavor is initially big cat pee, melons, citrus, mild bitterness, dusty round malty profile. A bit of an odd heat/bitterness in this. Interesting beer. Not bad. Cool label. The whole package is odd, very tropical and spicy, even floral. It works.

Bottle from The Wine Emporium 100914. Not bad, tasty enough without being overly hoppy. Decent beer.

Hazy dull tan, moderate aroma with a bit each of malt, fruit and hop. Medium bitterness, dash of alcohol, fairly sweet malts until the fruity hop character slides in.

Powerful fruit and citrus aroma, reminding me of candied apples. The nose immediately draws you in to the beer. It is a slightly hazy orange amber. The malt is complex but overall sweet. Caramel, toffee and earthy notes give way to piney hop flavors, finish astringent and dry. Bitterness is lasting but not overwhelming. West coast IPA brewers should definitely learn from the malt complexity. Hell, Elysian should learn how to translate this to their other brews! This beer is fantastic.
