COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The star of the show in this Tangletown-produced beer is the citrus and passion fruit aroma and flavor of New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. Whatever its name, it’s the same great beer, bittered with Northwest Chinook and drenched with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. Brewed with Maris-Otter pale, Munich and Cara-Red and Crisp 120° Starting gravity 17° Plato, 6.25% ABV, 66 IBUs. Don’t give up. We know you’ll get it. Think. Drink. It’s wiser than the others. Savant IPA. It’s the same terrific beer, with the same monkey, and a different name.

Hazy copper coloured body with an orange glow and a thick, two centimetre tall off-white head - nice. Aroma of peaches, bright grapefruity hops and yes, the best smell of all, passionfruit. Medium-bodied; Strong herbal and slightly grapefruity hops at first gives way to a good malt backbone showing some depth and then a mild hop bitterness at the end. Aftertaste isn’t too complex with only a handful of light fruit flavours capturing anything more from the light herbal hop notes and the mild malt. Overall, a good IPA, but nothing more and nothing less - doesn’t really compare to some of the best IPAs, but its definitely drinkable. Whether or not its worth searching out for, is up to you, but I wouldn’t really look for this one at all if I knew better - there are far too many IPAs better than this one. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 09-June-2012 for US$7.25 sampled at home in Washington on 01-September-2012.

THOUGHTS: This was really nice. It really showcased the hops’ flavors, but had enough balance to keep the hop bitterness from becoming overwhelming. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured an ever so slightly hazy, medium to dark, brownish, orangey amber with an average, off-white head that kept a nice sheet and left excellent lacing. The aroma had light to moderate caramel; moderate to heavy resin, grapefruit, passion fruit and other tropical fruit hops; and brown sugar. The initial flavor was moderately sweet, light to moderately acidic and lightly bitter; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet, light to moderately acidic and moderate to heavily bitter. There was caramel, brown sugar, passion fruit, tropical and citrus fruit hops, a little resin hops, a little grapefruit with brown sugars sprinkled on it, and a little semi-dark bread. The medium body was sort of oily, slightly syrupy and then dry with fizzy carbonation and an ever so slightly metallic finish.

From a bomber. Beautiful bright orange pour with a thick rocky white head. The aroma is gorgeous. Bright tropical fruit, grapefruit and some juicy fruit aroma over a lovely rich pale malt base. A touch of spice that rounds out the sweeter fruity notes on the back. Bright and zesty with a distinct whiff of peach as well. Awesome stuff.

Bomber from State Line, Elkton. Lovely pour, a deep translucent orange with a silky head. Fulsome nose, fruit coming through nicely but as a solid complement to the bright hops. Very smooth and full, creamy body. So sweet but at the same time subtle and balanced, no mere overdose of elements to create a mere effect. Superbly balanced and drinkable.

Thanks to 5000 for sending me this bottle. The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of pine and orange in it, as well as some sweetness from the biscuit malt. The flavor is more complex. I get a lot of mango and apricot notes at first, along with some biscuit malt. As I drink more I start to get some peach and other tropical fruit. The bitterness level is low but the hop flavor is very strong. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

650ml bomber pours a golden orange color with a finger and a half of white head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is lemon, grapefruit and passionfruit with some caramel. Taste is grapefruit and lemon bitterness balanced nicely with a passionfruit and caramel malty sweetness. Meidum bodied with nice carbonation leaving a nice tickle on the tongue. This is a nicely done IPA that is highly recommended for a great tasting experience.

Tap at the Blind Tiger, Manhattan - 01/03/12. Hazy orange colour with a frothy finger of off-white head. Hoppy citrus nose, orange predominates and a touch of lemon. Taste as nose with a certain amount of malts in the body and a tangy finish. Medium bodied/carbonation. OK - not as bitter as I’d expected from a west coast IPA.

From bottle to tulip. Dark copper color not a lot of aroma. So smooth and balanced with a very bitter hoppiness throughout. I like is one a lot.
