Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Its a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that its built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that its bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whos counting), but what it mainly knows is that its a great beer.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance The beer pours a deep golden amber color with a one finger head of just off white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading to leave a great level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell The aroma of the beer is on the sweeter side with lots of caramel and some lighter fruit notes of a tropical variety. Along with these are some light aromas of a grapefruit hop as well as a bit of pine. Taste The taste begins with a sweeter caramel taste with a little bit of fruity sweetness. Along with these are some lighter grapefruit hop flavors as well as a little bit of earthy hop. As the taste advances some floral hops increase in intensity with the caramel really getting rather strong toward the end of the taste. The earthy ups it up a bit at the end and with a light herbal flavor that also comes to the tongue leaving one with a sweet, but decently hopped IPA flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel The body of the beer is on the medium side with a carbonation level that is average. The mid range body and carbonation are quite nice for the easy drinking nature of the brew, all while upholding the hop and sweeter flavors nicely. Overall A rather easy drinking but quite tasty IPA. Not too high in abv. with a nice blend of hops. While nothing super out of the ordinary, it is rather tasty and at least worth one try.

Pour is a clear copper with a large white head. Aroma is a resiny hop with plenty of caramel malt to back things up. Flavor is moderately flavorful hops with a strong earthy malt with a little toffee left on the tongue. One of those IPAs where the strong malt presence almost takes over any hop profile. Maybe the beer was a bit old but this hops should have come out more.

Bottle from a trade. Nose is fruity, light melon. Pours a hazy light red in color, small white head. Taste is initially sweet then shows some lightly roasted character. Finish is almost astringently bitter. Not my cup of IPA.

Bottle share thanks to Homer321. Mildly hazy dark orange. big danky hop aroma, earthy and citrusy. Hops more muted in flavor. Semi sweet, some citrus, quite bitter.

Pours a hazy orangish copper with a frothy white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, caramel, guava, passionfruit and mango. Taste is a nice caramel malt base, tropical fruits, mango, passionfruit and a nice semi dry wine like finish. Absolute pleasure to drink!

Pleasant mild aroma leads into a sharp, biting palate. Amber colored with adequate creamy sand colored head. Malt and hops equally represent in the aroma, but hops come on full bore in the taste. Astringent , tingly palate, leaves your mouth alive.

Bottle, Savant label. Citrus aroma, crisp and slightly floral. Poured an amber/orange with a nice mellow caramel head. A bright fuzzy feel and a fresh hoppy taste bring this one home for me. For a go-to brew, this will do it for me. This doesnt need an accompaniment; its all good for just enjoying solo!

Big bitey hops in this one. A bit metallic, classis of sauvon for me. Im not a fan of the balance in this beer, too sweet at the start, too astringent at the finish.
