Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Itís a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that itís built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that itís bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itíll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whoís counting), but what it mainly knows is that itís a great beer.

Bottle. Beautiful dark golden pour with offwhite head. Balanced fresh aroma with peach and citrus. Taste has medium bitterness and is again very well balanced.

Reddish cloudy color. Bitter finish but fairly balanced. I enjoyed it and would have again if I came across it, but wouldnít seek it out as a gotta have.

Draft at Moriartys. Hazy dark orange pour with spotty off-white foam. Earthy and fruity. Plums and prunes. Spiced bark. Vanilla varnish. Gooseberry. Portobellos. Dark, sharp and jucy. Body feels a bit too watery though. Lasting spicy bite in the finish.

Itís some what hard to write this review because once upon a time this beer was outstanding. Iíve followed it since it was first released and seen it morph into something that lacks the beautiful qualities it once had. Bummer, itís just a basic hoppy redish beer.

Bottle pours a hazy amber color with a thin white top. Nose is fruity. Taste is citrus, mild earthiness and fruit.

Bottle. Poured a nice cloudy copper, big off white head that left lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of fruits, floral hops and some malts. Kind of a tropical taste, actually quite sweet and fruity for an IPA (not in a bad way), very nicely balanced with the bitterness of the hops. Interesting beer, very enjoyable.

Pours two and half fingers of head on a hazy dark straw colored body. The aroma is mostly pine with some orange. The taste has a malty start with moderate pine and lemon bitterness quickly following. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation. Very enjoyable.

Bottle: Stunning copper pour. Great clarity, bright color, and a modest tan head with even sheet lacing. A perfect 5 for appearance, no doubt about it. Lively aroma of resin and fruity hops. Plenty of citrus. The taste is more herbal and floral than expected, but still a little resin to boot. Caramel malt. Has a little of the subdued organic vibe that detracts from the intensity of the brew. Not like itís watered down, more like running at 75% strength. Overall itís good, but could have pushed beyond very good with more flavor impact.

New release, second time Iíve had it. Thought it was good first time. Unknown bottle date. Pours a golden on amber ale with some soapy white foam that falls to pocks of the same. A little hazy. Smells of limes, celery, b.o., some resin. Nice smell from the hops. Taste is sweet with a little catty flavor and some sweetness on the back end that reminds me of papaya. This was a bit better previously than last time, but good nonetheless. Medium bodied with lighter carb and a semi dry finish. Good beer, would like to see on draft regularly.
