Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Itís a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that itís built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that itís bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itíll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whoís counting), but what it mainly knows is that itís a great beer.

An orange amber IPA with a thin white head. In aroma, a pleasant pungent grapefruity hops, resinous and floral, lightly funky, marmelade. In mouth, a smooth bitter IPA with biscuitty malt, pinhey hops, catnip, very nicely balanced, not in your face, medium bodied. On tap at Oregon Brewerís Fest, July 31 2011.

Tap at Mahaffeyís. Pours clear dark amber with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is grassy, resin, floral and citrus hops with biscuit malt and fruity esters. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness, supporting malt and fruity esters with a dry finish. Medium body, warmth and carbonation.

Bottle @ home picked up at Wilburís Foco. This beer is now named Savant IPA, so that should be aliased here. Pours a hazy, bright, deep reddish orange appearance with a cream colored head. Fruity, grapefruity, white grape, citrusy, somewhat spicy, fairly potent hoppy, light ganja aroma. Quite spicy and floral hoppy, somewhat piney, big grapefruity hoppy, mildly sweet malty flavor with some herbal, bitterness on the finish. Another solid Elysian IPA, though I donít think I enjoy it as much as some of their others.

A tasty IPA, fresh from Premier Gourmet. Pours abundant head on an orange coloured body. Smooth mouthfeel relative for an IPA. Fruity, some bubble gum, light apple, orange, grape. Not as much as possible flavour derived from this hop, but still pretty good.

Sample at the Pike Street location (as "Savant IPA"). Pours a clear pale amber color with a medium bone white head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, hops and caramel malt. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, grapefruit and sweet malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering citrus hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

On tap at Parkway Tavern, pours a hazy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of resinous hops and pine, caramel malt and some herbally / pot-like notes. Flavour of weed-like hops, herbal hops and sufficient toasted malt to back. A bit too weed-like, but still well-made. Good.

651mL. Pours clear orange topped by rocky buttermilk foam. Sweet Mayan onion nose with orange candy drops. Taste is butterscotch candy with mild sweet onion and buttered sweet rolls. Palate is slicker with nutty bitterness. Not bad. No offensive diacetyl. Odd hop bill. Finishes tannic and dry. Slight tea leaf character. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

650ml bottle. It pours a deep amber with a foamy off-white head. The smell has a good bit of toasted grain, a nice change of pace in an IPA. It melds with some mangotomatomeloney scents. The flavor is nicely hoppy. Tropical goodness. Some resiny pine and citrus rind on the back end. The malt isnít too sweet and provides some backbone. This beer tastes freaking amazing, good one.
