Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Itís a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that itís built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that itís bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itíll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whoís counting), but what it mainly knows is that itís a great beer.

Draft. Pours orange with a white head. Big and bangin nelson sav hoppy fruity aroma with a good deal of citrus and lighter yeasty notes. Unfortunately the flavor comes across just a touch too harsh, and even a bit cat pissy, but still has a good dose of fruity hops and spicy yeast. Pretty good.

draft at Coles, Buffalo NY. Golden Orange pour, Fruity aroma, tropical notes, herbal. Solid bitterness, herbal numbness on the tongue, sweet passion fruit, refreshing mouthfeel. awakens your palate almost. Nice IPA

Draft at fields. Pours a hazy dark amber with rubied golden edges. Loose sudsy dun colored head. Nice sheety lace coming down the sides of the glass. Piney nose with some toasty caramel and a bit of iced tea showing. Creamy medium body with plenty of lively carb. Caramel, toast, and pine on the mid palate. This is a very appealing ipa despite offering a very conventional flavor profile. Long moderate piney finish.

Bottle:   Amberish, fairly hazy, fine sediment floats about, large pillowy off-white head, nice lacing.   Soft pithy nose, some citrus, a bit of resin.   Fairly good example of an IPA.   Not overly bitter, soft malt base.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Lingering resin and pith, but its not over the top.   Seems pretty refreshing and somewhat bright.   Pith, citrus peel, and soft resin lingers.   Fairly tasty!

3/21/13. 22oz bottle thanks to bitbucket. Hazy orange pour with a small khaki head. Laid back malty aroma and flavor with citrus and earthy hops. Maybe a touch of age. Not bad

Crystal clear light amber pour topped by a slice of white. Not particularly intense, but still hop-forward nose in which a wide array of tropical fruits meets grapey, woodsy, strongly citrusy aromas for which you could enumerate on and on flavor descriptives. Impressively complex hop profil for a single hop IPA. Bright and acidic flavour profile where perhaps more crystal malts than I would like aim at maintaining the balance and certianly attenuate the bitterness perception, but handicap the aroma at the same time. Spicy, woodsy, sandy, fruity, citrusy bitterness is pleasant, leading to the next sip and would rhyme with outstanding drinkability were it not for the above average sweetness. Still, the straightforward flavour extraction is pleasant enough and the beer is globally very clean. It makes for a good quaffer on a hot summer day.

March 16, 2012 - on draught at Coleís. Slightly hazy amber-gold with a decent creamy off-white head, nice lacing. Smells fantastic - catty, no sweetness, only a bit of alcohol - really smells like fresh cut marijuana buds - pungent and sticky (8+). Taste follows, but it is a bit sweet, gluten-y grain more than sticky ick - a bit more alcohol presence too, but the aroma kicks the flavourís butt. Average body, decent carbonation, quite astringent and a long pungent catty finish - really grabs the palate.

In short: A clean, semi-sweet and very fruity golden IPA. Good.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed fresh a few weeks after purchase, bottle forwarded to me by mcberko, thanks a lot Matt
The look: Clear golden body topped by a medium beige head leaving good lacings on the glass
In long: Nose is dominated by fruity hops that focus on tropical fruits such as mangos, pineapples but also peaches and other juicy fruits of the kind. Taste has all the same juicy fruit hops as in the aroma and they are all layered over a backbone of semi-sweet cookies. The resinous nature of the extra-fruity hops bring a sensation of fruit juice concentrate. Solid bitterness. Sweet at first, resinous fruity hops in the finish, overall well balanced. Another bomber that went down in record timeÖ and the real downside of drinking so much beer every night is I have a lot less beer the day after.
