Savant IPA :: Savant Just Knows Itís a Great Beer.

Without knowing quite why, Savant IPA knows a lot. It knows that itís built on Northwest 2-row malt, with touches of Munich, Cara-red and C-120 Crystal. It knows that it weighs in at around 6.3% alcohol by volume, that itís bittered with Northwest Chinook and finished with fruit-juicy New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops. It knows that itíll be back as the first Manic IPA from Elysian Brewing in the new year of 2014, available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft. It knows that 22 ounces is the same as a touch over 650 milliliters (and 13012 drops for anyone whoís counting), but what it mainly knows is that itís a great beer.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2012 Bottle from somewhere in NC. looks recemnt. deep honey color, with nice head modest Hops aroma, taste is OK but jst a tad thin, citrus notes, but not really west coast floral, some caramel and a bit high carbonation August 2012 Another bottle from Whole foods. Much more robust and hoppy.

Draught. Rather ordinary looking IPA. Wonderful floral aroma, with some forest-y tunes. Full bodied, well balanced the brewer allowed the malt its song. Lingering hop finish.

Bottle. Pours cloudy amber with a small head. Slightly sweet with citrus/fruity hop aromas. Great fruity/citrus hop flavor with a hint of pine. A light caramel malt backbone and a hint of yeast. Very nice fruity but bitter finish.

Probably the most "refined " beer that I have had over the past two years. This is the real deal, the final product Very refined. You would think that they have been brewing this for centuries. Passion fruit in an IPA? Brilliant! Only New Zealand hops? Home run! At the end of 2012, this might be the best beer that I have had all year.

22 oz bottle. Hazy orange/amber with a thick, dense off white head that leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is all Nelson, lots of grape juice and light tropical fruit, there is also a bit of sweet bubble gum in the scent. Flavor is firmly bitter upfront with a mild caramel malt sweetness for balance. Medium body with average carbonation and a dryish mouth feel. This is a very nice IPA that showcases the Nelson hop, really like this one.

Pours amber orange copper in color somewhat clear with a decent off white head. The flavor of the Nelson Sauvin hops come in a little more subtle than I would like, probably because it is a few months old. It is still somewhat unique as usual for those Nelson hops, in a good lightly bitter hoppy way. The aroma seems to have gotten last a bit as well, but I get some nice unique tropical fruitiness and a hint of bitterness, both from the hops.

650ml bottle. It pours a deep amber with a foamy off-white head. The smell has a good bit of toasted grain, a nice change of pace in an IPA. It melds with some mangotomatomeloney scents. The flavor is nicely hoppy. Tropical goodness. Some resiny pine and citrus rind on the back end. The malt isnít too sweet and provides some backbone. This beer tastes freaking amazing, good one.

650 ml bottle. Pours a copper orange with medium head which dissipates but leaves heavy lacing. Aromas of grapefruit and pitted fruit. Very fruity taste, citrus, yep passionfruit, and peach. Light bitter finish. A very good beer.

Thanks to curly for the trade! Cloudy orange, loose white head. Smells - no kidding - like grapefruit juice. Clean, crisp citrus flavors, with some piney, resiny flavors as it warms. Just enough malt flavors to keep it interesting. Very good stuff

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2014 On tap at alibi. Hazy gold. Great lacing. Smells like an IPA. tastes like one too. Prominent grapefruit aroma. Caramel taste. Barrel aged on tap at St. Augustine’s. Now THIS is bourbon-y. Great aroma from barrel, and the taste and palate are perfectly expected. Rating edited based on BA.
