| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 27, 2006 Pumpkin ale is the perfect beer to enjoy during the Fall season, and this style is usually available from September to November. I am a huge fan of this beer style, and Night Owl is one of the most complex and delicious versions of pumpkin ale I had had the pleasure of trying. This beer is brewed with 150 lbs of pumpkin meat in each batch along with pale, Munich, and crystal malts. Along with the pumpkin meat, green and roasted pumpkin seeds are added to the mash, boil, and fermenter. Horizon hops are used to bitter this beer, and then in the conditioning tanks this beer is spiced with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, ginger and allspice. This makes for a very delicious, flavorful beer perfect to sit and relax with on a cool October afternoon.
Night Owl pours to a beautiful, burnt orange color with a thick and creamy white head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful with complex aromas of sweet malt and spice. Lots of good sweet malty aromas combine with pumpkin pie aromas of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The palate on this beer is firm, with hearty malt flavors of biscuit, and sweet malt, paired with spicy/squashy flavors of pumpkin in the back ground. Night Owl finishes with more malt and pumpkin flavors up front, then ends with a spicy pumpkin pie spice flavors that linger on the tongue.
This is outstanding pumpkin ale that showcases real flavors of pumpkin meat with lots of real pumpkin pie aromas and flavors. What I really love about this beer is the spices do not overpower the malt and pumpkin flavors, and you really get the sense you are drinking a slice of pumpkin pie. If you find yourself in Seattle in the Fall, this beer is a must try on draught, or can be taken away in 22oz bottles at the brewpub, for $3 a bottle. Night Owl is a beer to savor and enjoy with crisp weather, or a nice beer to have with a desert of pumpkin pie with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. At 6.1% abv it is the kind of beer you can have a few of, and just a great beer to enjoy and relax with taking in a football game or a good book. terapenguin (11), USA

After Blue Moon’s, Jack’s (Michelob), and Dogfish Head, this one’s the best. It has all the best attributes of pumpkin beer (which I’ve already mentioned in the previous reviews), but it’s better; more like tasting an actual pumpkin pie than a beer with pumpkin pie flavoring, more robust, more flavorful. It’s GREAT............................................. charlie brown (lame joke). Perkeo (318), Portland, Oregon, USA
