Multiple draught pints at Redbones, late Nov ’06
Pumpkin colored body has graham cracker, auburn and beige hues as well. Medium-high clarity, though some light haziness. Creamy beige head is immovable, yet small, contributing consistent lacing in rings down the glass. Gentle carbonation carries upwards.
Very crisp hops, though light and hay/straw like strike a clear, somewhat bright note. Quite refreshing for a pumpkin ale. Spices and sweet caramel malt do come, inevitably, but a light breadiness and touches of biscuity/grainy malts help keep things very well balanced. Vanilla cream, cinnamon sugar and fresh, sweetened pumpkin meat all seem well-done and authentic. Very clean, without any spice astringency or strange phenolics. You can tell it’s going to be quite comfortably malted from the nose. No alcohol or flaws, very aromatic.
Pumpkin and vanilla bean flavor assert themselves initially, but sweet caramel and soft honey malt notes prevent any spiciness from overdrying or overwhelming the palate. Interesting caramel, bread and light biscuit character from the malt is supportive and lasting to the finish. Spices slowly climax, in an invigorating way, on the finish, while a grassy/hay-like hoppiness helps keep things mildly bitter and adds a slight crispness. Very soothing, nearly creamy texture with medium to medium-low carbonation, quite tight. No flaws. Maybe still a touch too sweet overall though still one of the better pumpkins I’ve had. I’d really like to find a pumpkin ale that tended a little more dry. Obviously this would prove a difficult feet, having to balance the dryness from the spice. I think even more hop crispness would have made this stuff phenomenal, as that would have added to the dryness.

Thanks to 5000 for sending me this bottle. Reviewed from notes. The beer pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of pumpkin and some cinnamon, as well as a light amount of tartness. The flavor is similar, only there is not tartness. I get some pumpkin as well as some nutmeg and allspice. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Pours a mahogany color. Smell is bursting with fresh baked pumpkin pie. Taste is mild by comparison, pumpkin, malts, some spice. Overall a pretty good beer.

[4213-20111230] 1pt6floz bottle. Pumpkin pie spices aroma. Clear, amber orange body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Grainy fruit pie spice flavour has a lingering bitter crust. Medium body. Tasty, drinkable. (8/3/7/3/14) 3.5

T: Rich spicy pumpkin flavor.. cinnamon and allspice are present... M: Smooth, moderately carbonated, thinner finish than i’d like O: good for one, the overwhelming spice flavor started to grate on me by the last sip

Aroma of pumpkin pie and ginger. Flavor is light pumpkin, no where near as strong as the aroma. Not bad, have had better pumpkin beers

On tap at Chuck’s 85th. Pours dark amber with about a finger of off-white head. Smells strongly of pumpkin spices. Bready and sweet. Tastes a bit bitter, small pumpkin flavor, melons and bread. Very light and a bit watery. I remembered it being better the last time I had it. It just didn’t seem to have the same kick this time. Still not a bad representation of the style, but obviously not the Great Pumpkin.

From a 1 pint, 6 ounce (650 ml) bottle purchased at BCLS. Medium to dark amber in color. Pours a nice, thick, beige-brown head. Highly carbonated. A lovely sweet aroma of fruit and spice, possibly cinnamon. Palate is a bit thin. Flavor is sweet and somewhat vegetal. Overall it’s pleasant, mildly reminiscent of pumpkin, cinnamon and vanilla. Couldn’t detect much if any malt or hops. Easy drinking, but no wow! feeling.
