The aroma is full of sweet chocolate, toast and a touch of prunes. The flavor is full enough to be rewarding, but not enough to really satisfy a chunky dark beer craving and brings in a touch of charcoal. Could really pass for a decent stout. npdempse (931), St. Petersburg, Florida, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 19, 2004 Deep, dark brown with streaks of red, beneath a rocky, dark tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate, with a light roasted character, sweet caramel, a bit of dark fruit and a bit of residual malt sweetness. The body is full, creamy and smooth, without being too big for the style. The flavor is well balanced with a nice sweet element countered with a light roasted character and slighty bitter hops at the finish. Immensely drinkable and extremely comforting. I wish Elysian was available in Chicago all the time. iwantalambic (1385), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 17, 2004 22 oz bottle: dense, rocky head…extremely tight bubbles and colored like cork. Opaque darkened brown sludge. Nutty aromatics, giving way to roasted cherries (almost burnt), camp fire embers, along with hints of vanilla and dark chocolate. Smooth cream on the tongue. Flavours are wrapped up in darkly toasted malts: fleshy raisins, dark (and sweet) plums, and burnt oak. A hint of pine is noticeable on the back of the tongue and is just enough to give balance to a wonderfully flavourful brew. HumuloneRed (750), Portland, Oregon, USA

Nose is light but, enjoyable with roastiness and soft vanilla and the tiniest hint of smoke. Body is slick medium, oily leaving a chocolatey, roasty aftertaste, bitterness at the finish is light and flowery. A refreshing porter, very easy to drink, especially at $4 per 22oz!
