On tap @ Stumbling Monk in Seattle. Viscous near-black body, low brown head. Rich malty profile, brothy, with notes of soy sauce, chocolate, vanilla, finishing with notes of aniseed and wood. Nice.

Dark brown, rich molasses nose with a hint of that Beijing vinegar, black bean sauce, molasses, and other rich, dark stuff. Good rich impy brew.

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours an amber-tinged black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out moderate toasted malt, a touch of licorice, and powdery dry cocoa. Flavour is very fruity and roasty, with roasted malt, a little licorice, dark fruits and caramel. Well-balanced, though perhaps a tad fruity and licoricey for me. Full-bodied and drinkable for what it is. Nice one, but not my type of impie.

On tap at St Augustine’s in Vancouver. A black beer with a whitish head. Coffee and chocolate notes on the nose. This is confirmed on tasting, with fruity chocolate notes on the tongue and a faint note of coffee in the background. Nice. 3.8.

Black color. Mild aroma of roasted malt and yeast, dark chocolate. Round mouthfeel, with just moderate sweetness; good roasted malt flavor with light peppery note and leather; strong bitterness and some alcohol note in the final.
Robust and straight forward.

On tap at St. Augustine's. Super dark brown and wide ruby edges. Aroma of milk chocolate, coffee, mud, slight licorice and vanilla but only when chilled. Taste is sweet and a sharp bitterness. Late-coming dry finish from an odd watery but full mouthfeel.

Sampled during VCBW 2013 at the River Rock Casino Resort pouring black in color with a light brown head leaving some decent lacing. Aroma is roasted grains and coffee with hints of chocolate. Taste is a roasted grain and coffee bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness. Medium to heavy bodied with light carbonation. A nicely done Imperial stout that I recommend others who get the chance to pick it up.

Dark with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, liquorice, oak, hint of bourbon & vanilla. Slightly oily mouthfeel, nicely balanced palate. Taste is chocolate, oak, liquorice.

Draft at 16 Tons Taphouse, Eugene. Pours very dark, with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, with some booze and slight woodiness. Body is sinfully rich, creamy, finish is sweeter at first, followed by a woodiness from the barrels, then vanilla, then bourbon. Easily the best beer I’ve had from Elysian, although some might find it a tad sweet.
