22 picked up at the COOP for an okay $10ish.. Poured into my small Teku and a 1" dark brown head rises up and drops back pretty quickly, black brew is expected and looks a little thin. Roasty with big oak.. Dry with too much char that blows out most any other RIS elements, could really use some sweetness or residual maltiness to bring things back into more drinkable realm... Waaay too dry. The bones of a decent stout are there, but this is not good by any stretch.

Bomber. Pours a jet black color with a medium white head. A big milky chocolate nose. The flavor is more chocolate, sugary, smooth fluffy palate, light oak. Works very well. Smooth. Light metal in the finish.

Bottle. Black pour, big, lasting, thick brown head. Aroma is roasted grain, chocolate and... metal (?). Flavor leans dry, moderately bitter in the middle, with roasted malt and coffee, but pretty simple. Mild carbonation. Palate is pretty thin for such a big brew. Finishes with a lingering bitterness. This is not very interesting, and doesnít compete with their Dragonstooth stout.

22. Thanks, G! What an awesome, unexpected treat. I canít really give these guys my money anymore, though I will happily buy any Elysian employee a beer, provided they didnít vote in favor of the buyout. Still, they have a lot of talented brewers making some very nice beers, and this turns out to be one of them. This is extra cool because this is very much my style of beer in a lot of ways, itís been around since before the buyout, but I donít remember ever hearing of it until last night. Pours an opaque chalky black with a dense and creamy tan head that goes away right away. Nice big coffee nose, showing some oak in the background and some toasty malts, but very much like a bag of freshly roasted coffee beans. Heavy thick body with sluggish carb. Coffee, dark chocolate, some sweet notes from the wood, and a beautiful creamy umami to the mid palate. Very dessert-like, but enjoyably so, not cloying at all. Long roasty slightly-sweetened coffee finish. Good beer.

On tap @ Stumbling Monk in Seattle. Viscous near-black body, low brown head. Rich malty profile, brothy, with notes of soy sauce, chocolate, vanilla, finishing with notes of aniseed and wood. Nice.

Dark brown, rich molasses nose with a hint of that Beijing vinegar, black bean sauce, molasses, and other rich, dark stuff. Good rich impy brew.

On tap at St. Augustineís, pours an amber-tinged black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out moderate toasted malt, a touch of licorice, and powdery dry cocoa. Flavour is very fruity and roasty, with roasted malt, a little licorice, dark fruits and caramel. Well-balanced, though perhaps a tad fruity and licoricey for me. Full-bodied and drinkable for what it is. Nice one, but not my type of impie.

On tap at St Augustineís in Vancouver. A black beer with a whitish head. Coffee and chocolate notes on the nose. This is confirmed on tasting, with fruity chocolate notes on the tongue and a faint note of coffee in the background. Nice. 3.8.

Draught at St. Augustineís, Vancouver
Black color. Mild aroma of roasted malt and yeast, dark chocolate. Round mouthfeel, with just moderate sweetness; good roasted malt flavor with light peppery note and leather; strong bitterness and some alcohol note in the final.
Robust and straight forward.

On tap at St. Augustine's. Super dark brown and wide ruby edges. Aroma of milk chocolate, coffee, mud, slight licorice and vanilla but only when chilled. Taste is sweet and a sharp bitterness. Late-coming dry finish from an odd watery but full mouthfeel.
