Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA Nov 4, 2009 Bottle, New Belgium version.
Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium to dark yellow.
Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, cereal, wort), moderately hoppy (resin, grapefruit), with light notes of detergent and cotton candy.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter.
Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic, lightly to moderately astringent.
Rough malt character (some raw unfermented grain smell even!), otherwise quite simple and uninteresting. Nice mouthfeel is about it. yobdoog (1420), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Nov 3, 2009 Dark orange color with a small head. Aroma has pine and citrus hops with a balanced caramel sweetness. Flavor is similar, a bit of a lingering pine hops bitterness. humulushound (109), British Columbia, Canada Nov 1, 2009 Amber color with bubbly white head. Aroma is citrus and pine hops, light biscuit. Flavor is less pronounced citrus, more bitter and spice, light caramel and hop resin. Finish is lasting bitter-sweet and moderate in strength with a fairly dry mouthfeel. Drinkable but I would give many other IPAs a shot before coming back to this one. italianjohn (337), Bensalem, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 30, 2009 Clear Orange/copper pour creamy fluffy white head light citrus and malty aroma caramel and bready malt taste then a citrusy hop finish .... balanced and the malt/hop flavor is average ... an easy drinking ipa if your into balance JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 29, 2009 Bomber from ditmier - thanks, Eric! Nice pale amber pour with a light fluffy head. Soft toasted malts in the aroma blend nicely with faintly sweet fruity hops. Initial thoughts were that this brew - which has a lovely, creamy mouthfeel - might be a bit too biscuity for my taste, but turns out that Elysian really hits the mark with the English style, with an invitingly fragrant hop blend coming through easily after the initial sips. Full, well balanced, and really enjoyable. joeneugs (282), Livermore, California, USA Oct 26, 2009 Pours a golden color with a fine off white head. The aroma is very lactic with some light citrus notes. Kind of a strange sour milk nose. Definitely English in style. Flavor is spicy and bready with caramel in the background. Finishes spicy bitter. Nice diversion from the usual west coast ipa’s. alagnak (293), Littleton, Colorado, USA Oct 24, 2009 Bomber with ’Brewed @ New Belgium for Elysian’ written on side. Aroma has some pungency and a little pineapple/mango tropical thing. Flavor is pretty straightforward, hoppy West Coast IPA, though it’s pretty well-balanced. Nice carbonation, very drinkable. Overall, it was good, but I’d been hoping for a little more. jjuf1853 (467), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Oct 21, 2009 Draft at Taphouse (Seattle, WA). Hazy, copper amber pour with a foamy tan head. Citrus hop aroma and flavor. Goes down smooth and easy with a nice bitter finish.
