mesperon (133), Jersey City, New Jersey, USA Apr 9, 2009 Mellow hop aroma, nice floral hop taste, but doesn’t measure up to the name. Not just the IPA name. I would call this a good Pale, but not an IPA. But when a beer is called Immortal, i expect to be floored by overpowering hops and a flavor that will remain on my palate for ages. As it was, it was good, but not memorable, and very mortal. linc33 (177), Albany, New York, USA Apr 6, 2009 From a bomber. Fantastic IPA colour, good aroma, but extremely light on taste. Definitely not PNW-style IPA, and I don’t have enough knowledge of the British style to make a determination. Strong hop finish. Was not satisfied. hayduke (1620), Eureka, California, USA Apr 1, 2009 This 22 oz bottle was brewed by the Boulder Brewing Company under an agreement. It poured a copper color with a fat white head and good lacing. Nose was of citrus hops and pine. Very rich and creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is lightly bitter and the finish is long, smooth and bitter as well. Very easy to drink and exceptionally refreshing. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA Mar 31, 2009 Elysian The Immortal IPA is a dense, slightly hazy, bubbly golden ale with a thick, frothy, foamy off-white head that has great retention and lacing. It has a syrupy sweet aroma like malt candy and something floral. It is medium-full bodied; very smooth and syrupy. It’s kind of bitter, but quite sweet. The sweetness is a bit much. It actually kind of tastes floral, like violet candy. It’s pretty good, but I didn’t really need a full bomber of this. I’m sweet enough already. keepersj12 (774), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA Mar 25, 2009 Nice hop aroma from the bottle. Mine was hugely carbonated. Big pillow of a head that lasted throughout. Nice sweet start with a hop dry finish. Very nice. Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Mar 24, 2009 Pours coppery with a thin white head. Smells earthy with sime sage and yeastiness. Tastes bitter and earthy with some nice subdued spiciness on the finish. eyesolus (64), Mill Creek, Washington, USA Mar 16, 2009 Tap at Tangletown; refreshing, hoppy, and strong; slight spice in the back; nice lace. (#42) GarrettB (494), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 11, 2009 My enthusiasm for Elysian Brewery has dampened a bit since I had a string of so-so beers from them, and next in line is a beer style I’m not too keen on: Elysian’s Immortal IPA. A medium-thin ash gray head crowns a cheery fox-orange beer, buzzing with energy. In contrast the aroma is muted and heavy, threatening grains, and grapefruit in a watery, motley bouquet. With a little warmth, some peach blooms into the aroma. But by and large, an unexciting smell. The flavor is also on the blander side, but the aftertaste is much more engaging. I also appreciate that this isn’t the typical American Hop Bomb, but a much better behaved IPA. The flipside of that, I suppose, is the relatively mundane flavor profile - a moderate bitterness and scattered peach notes, making for a drinkable, sippable, acceptable IPA. Better this, I think, than having my esophagus raked with hops flavors, though.
