4oz. sample @ Churchkey, DC Copper color, light off-white head. aroma, lots of dark sugar, caramel malts, dark fruits. flavors, caramel malts, light floral hops, dark sugar, abv is light for 10% lending some burnt caramel elements along with a nice lingering sticky syrupy mouthfeel. Dark fruits with fig, dates add to the enjoyment, warming abv, finish caramel with caramelized apple/pear impression. Nicely done, a tad on the bitter side.

Draft at Eulogy. Poured a dark cherry color with a thin foamy ring that almost disappeared. Full palate of dark red fruits. Brandied cherries. Sulfered dates and figs. Sweet in balance but some dry hop bitterness keeps it in check. Bit syrupy. Fruit flavors spike too much. Mostly smooth but the high abv is not hidden. Nice to find a darker barleywine but this one seems to be holding on to too many disparate notes to be really great.

Haandbryggeriet fest 2012. A fine version of a barley wine. Sweet, as it should be, but not cloyingly so. Some burned sugar. Fine bittersweet tail.

Bottle, shared with Parksy. This was the worst looking pour I’ve seen in a while. It started off nicely- light orange amber, but nearing the end a huge bolus of sediment clunked into the glass like an unwelcome turd. It was about the size of my thumb, bigger even. Really gross. Parksy asked if it was the body of a dead mouse! Anyway, in the end this turned out to be an okay BW, nice sweet malt, thick toffee with fruit nuances. But that gross pour was like a bad fart at the start of a good meal-- the air never completely cleared.

Aroma is mild nuttiness and sweet malts. The flavor is mainly heavy sweetness, almost sugary. Almost cloying, could have been better.
