This pours pitch black with a quickly disappaiting head. The nose is a mix of pine resin and heavy roasted malt. This drinks like a hoppy porter more than a CDA/BIPA. It lacks that interplay of creaminess, hops and roast. This mind of reminds me of an odd soft drink.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of Countbeer. Pours an opaque black with a small beige head. Hard roast malts in the nose with a herbal hoppiness. Medium body, hard roast, bitter chocolate and coffee with a malty bitter finish. There’s certainly hops in here, but they don’t really shine, so the end result is more of a bitter Porter really. 250812

Relay is what it says. Smells like IPA tastes like stout. Nice drinking moderate to full body. Maybe the best of Emelisse so far

Bottle @ Home Pours a thick dark brown, with a thick liquorice coloured head. The nose isn’t that rich, but it more than makes up for that in flavour. The taste is a roasted full body, with hints of espresso (no sugar, no cream!) and a nice rounded bitter finish. Very well balanced and even a bit deceptive, the solid amount of alcohol (8%) is very well hidden.

Cask at GBBF2012, which made for a curious appearance as (not for the first time at GBBF) CAMRA regulations led to the foreign beer bar producing a third of liquid and two thirds of head! Jet black colour. I thought this was possibly the best balanced Black IPA I’ve had - often the dark malt seems to be used as food colouring, but here you actually get sweet roasty on the way to stouty malt flavours before the grapefruit citric hop finish takes over. So much going on, excellent.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2012 Pours brown black with little khaki head. Smells sweet and stout like with a nice fruit forward knock. The taste is rich and well roasted but the fruit of the yeast and hops over comes the roast. It has a delicious rose and sweet grain flair with a modest dry finish. Belgian black ipa explains a lot. It finishes with a rich maltiness that is very pleasant, and somewhat more like a stout than black ipa but after a few seconds it gets progressively dry. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

Bottle. Very dark brown beer with a nice brown head, leaving nice lacing on the glass. Hoppy roasted aroma, chocolate, cocoa, metal, perfume, hay, citrus, grapefruit notes, some biscuits, grassy and with herbal notes. Hoppy flavor, really bitter, grassy, metal, pine and grapefruit, roasted chocolate aroma, cocoa powder, grapes, floral notes, perfume, Alcohol is very well hidden. A very good IPA and a very good porter/stout. At the same time.... Thats what you really want from a black IPA.

After the beer was served in the glass there was found a lasting quantity wall adhesive light brown foam collar which was fine and even of structure. The beer also contained much carbonic acid in the glass. The beer has a clear black and a sweet taste. The after tast of the beer is hoppy bitter with a roasted malty touch . This beer smells caramelly.
