Cask at GBBF2012, which made for a curious appearance as (not for the first time at GBBF) CAMRA regulations led to the foreign beer bar producing a third of liquid and two thirds of head! Jet black colour. I thought this was possibly the best balanced Black IPA I’ve had - often the dark malt seems to be used as food colouring, but here you actually get sweet roasty on the way to stouty malt flavours before the grapefruit citric hop finish takes over. So much going on, excellent.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2012 Pours brown black with little khaki head. Smells sweet and stout like with a nice fruit forward knock. The taste is rich and well roasted but the fruit of the yeast and hops over comes the roast. It has a delicious rose and sweet grain flair with a modest dry finish. Belgian black ipa explains a lot. It finishes with a rich maltiness that is very pleasant, and somewhat more like a stout than black ipa but after a few seconds it gets progressively dry. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

Bottle. Very dark brown beer with a nice brown head, leaving nice lacing on the glass. Hoppy roasted aroma, chocolate, cocoa, metal, perfume, hay, citrus, grapefruit notes, some biscuits, grassy and with herbal notes. Hoppy flavor, really bitter, grassy, metal, pine and grapefruit, roasted chocolate aroma, cocoa powder, grapes, floral notes, perfume, Alcohol is very well hidden. A very good IPA and a very good porter/stout. At the same time.... Thats what you really want from a black IPA.

After the beer was served in the glass there was found a lasting quantity wall adhesive light brown foam collar which was fine and even of structure. The beer also contained much carbonic acid in the glass. The beer has a clear black and a sweet taste. The after tast of the beer is hoppy bitter with a roasted malty touch . This beer smells caramelly.

Bottle. Black coloured beer with a small, tanned head. Aroma has medium hop presence and a nice, roasted and licorice backbone. Flavour is well balanced between being full hoppy and delivering a nice, roasted character. Really nice. Good carbonated mouthfeel and a small alcoholic warming making it a great beer to enjoy in comfort. Great surprise!

375cl bottle. Almost pitch black with coffee like head. Nose : very rich aromas of fresh pine and citrus mixed with coffee, roasted bread. A bit alcohol. Sip ; low carbonation with medium thick body. Oily like full milk texture. It has a straight forward coffee with grapefruit bitterness mixed with some little dark chocolate tart background. I was always wondering what the hell is a black IPA and I wasn’t disappointed discovering that it combines both ; a good IPA with aromatic hops and a bitter stout. Good one.

Bottle at Olympen. Dark brown body, small beige head. Aroma is a bit light for the style, but still good. Mostly roasty and coffee and a little bit of citrus hops. Caramel taste with pine, dark fruit and chocolate. Good roasty finish. A good beer that I’d guess was a stout and not a black ipa.
