Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. A very dark brown-black beer with tart red fruit and citrus flavours, roasted coffee notes followed by a creamy pine finish. Excellent!

Dark coca cola coloured with a hint of red coming through when poured, settling down to a hazy dark brown. Big cappuccino coloured head, medium bodied, not too much carbonation. Aroma is a really good blend of fruity hops. Once in the mouth, it’s sweet but the subtlety of the fruit flavours is somewhat buried beneath the bitterness that follows.

Bottle from the Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Pours black with a decent cream head. Initially spicy hop notes are prominent before pine and tropical fruit. Nice and bitter. The roasted notes of chocolate and coffee could come through a bit more, but this is still a fine beer.

Bottle to half-pint glass (shared with the Mrs.). Looks solid; more like a Brown IPA though. A hazy hazelnut with foamy off-white head. Smells of dark malt, roast and bitter hops with a touch of nuttiness. Tastes like it smells with a touch of chocolate that gives it a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Good beer.

11.2oz bottle, from Dutch’s. Best before notched 03/2015. Lot A. Dark chocolate, some dark fruit up front. Smoke. Earthy, kind of piney hop. Moderate sweet taste. Moderate bitter. Very dark red color. Appears brown/black from a distance. Hazy. Beautiful thin off-white / khaki head, that leaves great, thicker lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, crisp, lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Some coffee flavors in the malt profile, and some good cake-like doughiness. Dark fruit, dark chococolate. Solid, interesting assertive black IPA. Big potent bitter/sweet taste. Slight hint of an alcohol edge at the end.

On tap at Gollem’s tasting room. Dark almost black color with beautiful creamy head. Fruity armoma with roasted malt and chocolate. Taste roasted malt taste with hop bitterness. In between surprising flavors like grapefruit and sweet notes.

330ml bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma has chocolate, roasty malt, pithy citrus zestiness with a light smoky woodiness. Finish is balanced, leaves traces of sweet orange tang and roasted nut. Carbonation average to lively and lasts well. Really well done black IPA
