Bottle from Reading BF 2014 drunk at home. Black beer lasting dark beige head. Some chocolate some light grapefruit hop aroma. Touch of roastiness. Quite thick in the mouth. Alcohol gives it body and some heat on the finish. For me it’s a hoppy strong stout but lacking complexity in the malts given the size of the beer. It’s not bad just a little one dimensional. Aroma drifts a bit too towards petrol.

Slight reddish tint to an almost black body topped with a creamy beige head. Aroma is good, coffee, tobacco, roasted malts, hops. Flavour is quite heavy roasted malts some hop bitterness comes through in the finish. Pretty good.

It does not smell or taste strong and full of hop as most black Ipas do. It is balanced, medium body.

33cl bottle pours with a dark mahogany colored body that supports a tall eventually kind of lumpy tan head that leaves behind clumpy lacing. The aroma offers up modestly dark roasted malts, bakers chocolate, a mineral note and then a vague fruitiness. The taste delights, oh my. I get a playful rich mix of dark roasted malts, burnt malts, earthy dark colored tobacco leaves, earthy black tea, dark chocolate and earthy rich dark roasted coffee. All this big yummy darkness slides quickly into a rapidly growing bitter hoppiness that’s grapefruit and clementine and then a mix of bitter pine and bitter floral hops. Every once in a while the flavor hops peak through and there’s a wedge of clementine, a sweet grapefruit note and then some floral hops. This is full big bitter roasty and has wafer thin moments of juicy fruity hoppiness. It ends with dark roasted malts, burnt malts and dark roasted coffee as well as lingering hop bitterness. This is working for me. Nice one.

33cl bottle @ Homo Sibaris, served in Shaker. Pours dark brown with some reddish tones topped by a generous beige frothy head. Aroma is licorice, roasted malts and hints of caramel. Overwhelmingly malty taste, sometimes similar to toffee, and also the expected hoppy notes (lacking intensity though). Chocolaty aftertaste, the bitterness seems most sililar to dark chocolate. Curiously enough, the palate is quite sweet. Medium body, good carbonation. There are some interesting points, but it’s still pretty average.

Draft - Flowery, grapefruit hops. Cloudy amber with almost no head. Almost medicinal, with hop bitterness and herbal hops. Sweet dark malts but long bitterness. Very interesting, sweet, flowery and bitter.

Tasted on tap at Gollems (Amsterdam). 24/04/2014. Black colour with a very nice white head. The aroma is roasted, typical I.P.A. With Coffee, chocolate and nuts notes is a mix between the bitterness of a I.P.A. and the full body of the stout. Next one please!!

Almost black, very dark ruby color with small white head which lacing glass. Aroma is mixture of hops, smooth citrus, grass, sweet tropical fruits and chocolate, caramel, dark malts. Taste is overall bitter, with a hint of sweetness. Flavors of hops, grass, resins, some tropical fruits with dark chocolate, coffee, dark malts in background. Medium body with medium carbonation. Another nice, drinkable beer from Emelisse.

Gedronken vanuit een 30cc fles. Normaliter vind ik een black ipa te bitter in afdronk door het gebrande mout. Maar deze is veel zachter van smaak en drinkt veel lekkere weg. Alcohol percentage is ook precies goed.
