Bottle at HaandFestival 2012. Looking quite nice in the glass, with its dark brown, almost black body and moderately sized beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted, with some dried fruits and a sort of smoked mackerel touch. There are hops too, but not enough I think. That goes for the flavor too, the lack of hops I mean, with some citrus peel and bitterness, but it’s mostly on the malty side, with dried fruits and some roasted malts. A little sweetness too. Full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated, finishing with a nice blend of roasted malts and bitterness. A slightly weird one, not the typical Black IPA, but sure drinkable. 120504

Bottle. Not sure if it was a bit off; smelled very strongly of dark berries and visible sediment in glass. Tasted better than it smelled but still unbalanced malty purple grape taste

Dark brown colour, with a brown head that does not last. Almost no lace. Is it me, or it smells as indian ink?, Well, first impression passes, there’s resine, dark fruits and caramel. Too much carbonation. Taste of resines, caramel and dark fruits. Not my favourite Emmelisse.

Old 330 ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany color with light head. Aroma of fruity pine, dark sugar, and lightly roasted malts. Flavors of dark fruit, pine, and sweet malts with a long bitter finish,

Pours almost completely black and covered by a large and long lasting beige head. Amazing tropical fruits aroma, lots if sweet fruits. Some very gentle roasty aroma later on. Muld chocolate in the taste at first, fruity presence wirh very fine and lingering hoppy bitterness. Delicious.

Mooi donker bier met een mooie caramelkleurige schuimkraag. Perfecte bittere nasmaak die niet te sterk is maar lekker lang blijft hangen. Neigt wat naar caramel en drinkt lekker makkelijk weg.

Poured from a bottle courtesy of my Summer Secret Santa. Aroma is moderately malty with a lot of toasted bread and cracker with lighter caramel and toffee. Some medium light raisin notes. Moderately strong hop aromas with a lot of grapefruit and woodsy, resin notes. A hint of alcohol. Pours a murky, dark brown with a touch of a red hue and a medium large, thick, dark tan head. Moderate lacing with medium length legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with a bit more sweetness mid palate. Moderate toasted bread and cracker malt notes with lighter caramel and raisin. Medium high to high bitterness with a bit of alcohol spice. Moderate hop notes, mostly woody but also some light grapefruit and pine resin. A bit of a floral character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent IPA though I don’t think it is really a black IPA so much as a brown one. Hops are very European, but I think that works with the darker malt notes.

0.33 bottle from Pivoljub, Ljubljana, Slovenia. Pitch black with ruby tint, strong beige head, leaving lacing. Blueberry yoghurt, tobacco, roast and soy sauce. Predominantly fruity, roasty background. Strong bitter kick, heavily hopped, develops a malty and roasty taste, quite sweet, with an aromatic finish. Heavy and serious. No joke, great IBLA.
