Bottle at HaandFestival 2012. Looking quite nice in the glass, with its dark brown, almost black body and moderately sized beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted, with some dried fruits and a sort of smoked mackerel touch. There are hops too, but not enough I think. That goes for the flavor too, the lack of hops I mean, with some citrus peel and bitterness, but it’s mostly on the malty side, with dried fruits and some roasted malts. A little sweetness too. Full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated, finishing with a nice blend of roasted malts and bitterness. A slightly weird one, not the typical Black IPA, but sure drinkable. 120504

Koffiezwart kleurig bier met een crème kleurig schuimkraag. Smaak sterke espresso met een ligt afdronk. Met veel eten op de bodem.Gedronken met Bryan.

After years of getting acclimatised to European IPAs that focus on floral notes and not hops for the sake of hops, this was an assault on the moisture in my mouth. Delicious, though.

Reddish brown colour with big fluffy head with lots of lacing, looks stunning. Aroma has red berries, tropical fruits, maybe mango? Taste continues with the same recipe, there is grapefruit, tropical sweeter fruits, red berries and again mango. Medium body and high carbonation. Still I wonder where is the ’black’ in my Black IPA?

Net zoals de andere van emelisse die ik al geprobeerd heb vind ik dit ook absoluut niet lekker.

BOTTLE 33 CL from dcmchew. Thanks! Look: almost black with red highlights, beige frothy head. Aroma: mostly hops - citrus, tropical fruit, gooseberry. Taste: hops as well - citrus, sweet and tart fruit, solid clean hop bitterness. Not much black malts here.

Black and opaque, full tanned head. Fruity aroma (oranges, mango) but a bit musty. Crisp and fruity taste. Bitter finish, a bit roastiness in the end. Full body.

On tap at Pizzeria Paradiso Old Town. Pours an opaque dark brown with lingering beige head that leaves spotty lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and subdued hop bitterness. Flavor is same with an overall sweet malty character and mild citrusy hops. Medium bodied, active carbonation, and a bitter finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Black with a nice foamy beige head. Aroma of tar, citrus and fresh hops. Very nice rich taste which compliments the aroma. Smooth and lengthy finish.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 3/2015. Pours hazy very dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, floral, grass, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, light char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops and roasted malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Black IPA. All around good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and roasted malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
