Bottle at HaandFestival 2012. Looking quite nice in the glass, with its dark brown, almost black body and moderately sized beige head. The aroma is lightly roasted, with some dried fruits and a sort of smoked mackerel touch. There are hops too, but not enough I think. That goes for the flavor too, the lack of hops I mean, with some citrus peel and bitterness, but it’s mostly on the malty side, with dried fruits and some roasted malts. A little sweetness too. Full-bodied and pleasantly carbonated, finishing with a nice blend of roasted malts and bitterness. A slightly weird one, not the typical Black IPA, but sure drinkable. 120504

Pours almost pitch black with a 2 finger beige head. Aromas of grapefruit and heavy malts with some dark chocolate. Tastes is as the smell suggests, with a lingering bitterness at the back end. Medium bodied. Black IPAs aren?t normally my thing but this isn?t too bad.

Aroma: Toffee, Caramel, Mango Appearance: Black with ruby edges. Medium off-white head. Taste: Alcohol, slight astringency, slight sourness. Palate: Medium body, slightly creamy texture, soft carbonation and a hot, bitter finish. Overall: Smells lovely, taste doesn’t match; overpowered and under flavoured.

Couleur brune sombre, petite mousse beige. Nez houblonné sapin citron, notes café malté. Gout chocolat noir, malt un peu grillé et houblonné sapin avec zeste agrume amer. Bonne amertume en fin de bouche et Bière douce en bouche. Un délice!

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. A very dark brown-black beer with tart red fruit and citrus flavours, roasted coffee notes followed by a creamy pine finish. Excellent!

Dark coca cola coloured with a hint of red coming through when poured, settling down to a hazy dark brown. Big cappuccino coloured head, medium bodied, not too much carbonation. Aroma is a really good blend of fruity hops. Once in the mouth, it’s sweet but the subtlety of the fruit flavours is somewhat buried beneath the bitterness that follows.

Bottle from the Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Pours black with a decent cream head. Initially spicy hop notes are prominent before pine and tropical fruit. Nice and bitter. The roasted notes of chocolate and coffee could come through a bit more, but this is still a fine beer.

Bottle to half-pint glass (shared with the Mrs.). Looks solid; more like a Brown IPA though. A hazy hazelnut with foamy off-white head. Smells of dark malt, roast and bitter hops with a touch of nuttiness. Tastes like it smells with a touch of chocolate that gives it a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Good beer.
