Bottle from Stirchley Wines; pours dark brown zero head, sweet malt aroma, real thick mouth feel, tastes of chocolate and raisins. Some coffee with a high level of bitterness. Very good impy stout.

The basic Emelisse imperial, with a slowly building but eventually rocky, beige head and ink black colour. Strong aroma of coffee, bayleaf, iron, nutmeg, peat, bitter chocolate, straw, ginger. Rounded taste of dried fruits, iron-like undertone, ashes, coffee powder, strong roasted bitterness, bit sticky finish, quite strong carbonation for the style, in the end some warming, even a bit astringent alcohol as well, not too well hidden. Meritorious attempt at an ambitious genre but not quite there yet.

0.33L bottle. Pours black with a thick brown head that lingers. Complex malt aromas. Chocolate, cinammon, overripe fruit, alcohol, Lots of coffee flavor up front with medium sweetness. Quickly transitioning to a long, drawn out roasted malt bitterness, leaving alcohol in the throat and chest. Full body with a creamy mouthfeel and minimal carbonation. Overall, some pretty unique aromas and a nice mouthfeel. Flavor profile goes a bit too quickly to the roasted malt bitterness, but still, quite an enjoyable beer.

Bottle from Bierkoning. Opaque black pour with tenacious light brown foam. Aroma is rich, intense malty licorice notes, dark chocolate and a hint of smoke. Taste is intense, but keeps a nice equilibrium between sweet malty notes, umami smokiness and herbal licrorice notes, with a long bitter roasty finish. Palate is full bodied with light medium-carbonation. Imperial stout right where it should be, a winner.

Bottle from Coppers, Newcastle. This inky black beer pours with a thin, quickly disappearing tan head. It has molasses, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours, an oily mouthfeel with notes of burnt toast, roast coffee, black cherries and leather on the finish. Excellent!

The beer is a deep dark brown with a thin, oily beige collar. Aromas of dark fruit, particularly plums, chocolates, raisin, chocolates with raisins all up in them, raisins dipped in chocolate. Chocolate flavor, a hint of vanilla. Rich, roasted malt with a touch of espresso. Double digit abv well masked. A nice sipper.

300 ml bottle purchased at State Line. Pours a very dark brown/near black with light passing as a dark crimson hue. Aroma is bittersweet chocolate, dark fruits, cacao, light cinnamon and a slight boozy note. Flavor is same with molasses, anise and slight alcohol tang. Full bodied, mild carbonation, sweet dark toffee finish.

Bottle, 12C. Black with an inch of light tan head that fades but is never less than a coat. Aroma of blackstrap licorice, mocha, bread, anise, some dark berries. Just a little painty hint of alcohol. Very silky texture, just noticeable carbonation. Sweet with molasses, licorice, more dark berries than suggested by a sniff. More chocolate than coffee. Bitterness struggles a bit through the sweetness, then creeps up. A bit salty at the end. Not particularly complicated, but lovely.

Bottle with Kate and Adriaan. Pours oily black with little head to speak of. The aroma is dense chocolatey, roast malt, soy sauce. The flavour is sweet, chocolate, liquorice, roast malt, a light acidity from burnt malts. The alcohol is evident and warming. Enjoyed immensely.
