The Emelisse Rauchbier is brewed with a unique combination of five different malts,and with a large percentage of smoked malt from Bamburg, Germany. The maltery from which it comes is known around the world for the superior quality of this special malt, which is smoked on damp beechwood.

From notes, consumed on 6/2/13. Bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a dark caramel brown with almost a finger and a half of off-white head. Aromas of big smoke, ash, light caramel, whiskey, wood, subtle yeast. Tasting notes of smoke, slight sweetness, nutty, subtle dark fruit. Light body with a dry finish.

Maakun (896) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - FEB 18, 2014
Slightly hazy dark reddish-brown. Small bubbly beige head. Malty, red fruits, smoke is present, but not too strong. Light tropical fruit hops. Taste is light sweet at first, with a full bitterness coming right through. Medium bodied. Quite good for what it is, but I’m not a fan.

Bottle, bz Brown abmer murky. Pretty nice smokyness- bbq and jerky. Possibly not as intense as, let’s say, schlenkerla, but definitely the right kind. Soft full body. Lowish carbonation. A little astringently bitter finish. Excellent smoke beer.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Dancing Camel. Thanks Arizvisg. Hazy red. Starts fruity and then comes bbq smokiness with a little hickory. Sweetness in the mouth, a little like hickory sauce. Saucy, fulll-bodied, smooth, softly carbonated and ketchupy finish.

330 ml bottle at home. pours dark amber. Nice smoked bacon aroma and fruity hop aromas (orange). Medium body with roasty and slightly peaty notes. Taste of dark malt and salted caramel. Tasty.

Bottle from river city cellars on 05/05/2011. Clear copper body with a small white head. Sweet smoke and bready malt aroma. Big smoke flavor with some bacon and bready malt. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Pours a hazy brown with an off-white head. Aroma of malts, woody smoke, smoked bacon, some dark fruits. Flavour is mostly malty, with a lot of smoke. If you enjoy the style, this is recommended.

This beer is retired?? I just bought mine at Worldwide Wine in Southington, CT, in December 2013. The label looks quite different from the one shown here. The appearance provides a nice hint as to the style of beer; dark reddish brown with an intense opaque haziness, like a sinister cousin of a hefeweizen. The color is reminiscent of cooked ham or bacon. Subtle smoky aroma. The flavor is a bit mellow for the style - more ham than bacon. Light to medium bodied. The above-average ABV is a great fit for the style - it’s like a more approachable, tamer version of Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock.

Swaroga (1544) - Brussels, BELGIUM - DEC 24, 2013
33cl bottle. Cloudy and light brown with a small to medium head. NOSE : strong aromas of smoked cheese, tart and smoked plums. SIP : oily texture with decent carbonation and medium body. The beer is sweet on the start. Delicate lactic acidity and a moderate bitterness on the end. Aftertaste is earth and mud like. Flavor wise this beer is malty and it reminds me of a caramel cake or a "pain perdu". Quite quickly the smoky notes take over. They are dominating the middle and the ending but they still leave some space for complex malt and yeast flavors. Smoked plums, sauerkraut and mushrooms and smoked meat. OVERALL : Since I enjoy a bit too much smoked beers this one is truly a delight. Extra points for that.

At a tasting, thanks DSG, very hazy deep red to brown colour, jammy aroma with strawberries,dark bread and just a whiff of smoke, flavour of compost. smoked fish, earthy notes and anchovies, quite sour. Very nice and quite unusual.
