It’s a well known fact that I love a barley wine. Occasionally one will pop up on the shelves of a watering hole I frequent and lust will overtake me. That bottle, puchased and secreted in my bag, will find its way home to dit for a few months until an opportune moment arises when it is late at night, my beloved is away and I have a fire going, a cat unconscious in an odd resting position snoring gently and a mind to put on Leo Kottke playng Sleepwalker. This is when Barley Wine comes into its own. In the absence of blue cheese and port, there isn’t a better time and place. This one was clear and reddish amber in colour with a skim of enduring head. The aroma is of dessert stonefruit, stewed and rolled out into some sweet shortcrust pastry. This effect is replicated in the flavour and leaves an enduring and endearing effect on the palate. I love barley wine and this is a good one.

Kraftfull i aromen, hintar lite av ABV:n, sötma. Smaken är rikligt kraftig, mycket sötma, kanske lite anis. Aningen spritig.

Bottle 330 ml at home, into a snifter. ABV 12% Deep orange colour on the body, quite clear bbut with tiny pieces floating around in it. Something more than one finger of thick, off-white head, with very good retention. Medium thick lacing left around the glass along with foamy islands on the surface. Very fruity aroma, peaches, apricot, but also darker fruits like dates and plums. Great taste, sweet and fruity, again some peaches but more dark fruits now, some caramel too.Notable alcohol, both as a warming feeling on the body and as a light burning in the mouth. Thr best here is the body, really full, you can almost chew it, and perfect carbonation too. Overall one of the best Emelisse I’ve had.
