4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 JorisPPattyn (7311) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - FEB 6, 2012
No head, ink-black liquid. Superb woody-smoked Islay malt nose; peaty, phenolic, tarr and seasalt. Even more phenolic & tarry than the nose, but in the background, retronasal, an alcoholic fire of toasted and roasted malts is burning. Sweet black coffee notes. This is unidimensional AND balanced - rare! Warming, slick-viscous but not really thick MF. Oh, I know, I’m a s*cker for anything Islay and smoked. Even more thanks, thus, Kees!

(bottle) pours a deep black colour with a small dark beige head, very viscous. aroma of iodine, peat smoke, seaweed, light coffee and chocolate, brown sugar and herbal hops. flavour is toasted malts, furnace ash, caramel, brown sugar and lots of peat smoke, barrel-dominated yet surprisingly well-balanced. heavy-bodied with soft carbonation.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Martinus (1795) - Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS - MAR 13, 2012
Jet black beer, rather big dissipating tan head. Lovely aroma of peat, whisky, smoke, roasted malts, ash and light dark chocolate. Flavour sweet malty, whisky, peat, ash, milk chocolate. Full and silky mouthfeel. Finish peated whisky and burned malts. Holy smoke, I just love it when good beer and Islay flavours are combined.

Emelissen Ardbeg-viskitynnyreissä kypsytetty imperial stout kaatuu lasiin mustana muodostaen vaalean ruskeaa vaahtoa.

Very dark, dark brown head. Aroma and taste very peaty. Lots of whiskey in this one, more than in any other BA stous by Emelisse. Wood is als o very present. Other imperial stout elements like chocolate, coffee and roasted malts are harder to find, although there is quiet some bitter chocolate in the aftertaste. But as a huge whiskey fan (and Ardberg being one of my favorites) I really enjoy this beer! Body is good, carbonation relatively high, that might have been a bit smoother.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 OleR (4247) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUL 3, 2012
From a 0.33 L bottle. Creamy yellow-blond head. Body is opaque, very dark brown. Peaty and swampy(!) aroma up front. Then strong phenols, reminiscent of rubber, and leather maybe. In a good way. Also some well roasted dark malts, with tones of wood and tar. Extremely flavorfull, without being unbalanced. Big roasted malt body. Charcoal, wood, burnt caramel, bitter coffee. Even som dark dried fruits and a gentle underlying sweetness. Amazing! Medium to full body. Creamy texture. Boldly bitter, roasty and malty finish. What a treat!
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 luttonm (1631) - Belgrade, SERBIA - JUN 19, 2012
Small bottle from De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Wow, intense aroma, huge. Salty, pork, bog, rotting grass. Incredible whisky to base this off of, need to find that on its own. Great balanced body for such a strong base beer. Interesting counter to the base RIS which was tasted by its side. Challenging, wonderful.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours pitch black with a small tan head and a sweet aroma with notes of whiskey, peat, coffee, cigar smoke and roasted malts. The taste is mildly sweet with strong notes of peat, whiskey and hints of dark chocolate, espresso, roastes malts and smoked eel. A really nice beer this is!
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Leighton (6983) - London, ENGLAND - AUG 3, 2012
Bottle at Bruce’s Housewarming Party Tasting, London. Pours black-brown with a small, foamy beige head. Huge peat nose, all smoke and roast, with some scorched earth notes. Big sweet flavor with lots more peat, whiskey, earth, dark chocolate and dirt. Big bodied with average carbonation. Moderately warming on the finish with loads of peat, smoke, burnt grass, burnt wood. It’s a hugely oaky, peaty beer, so if you enjoy that, you’ll enjoy this beer.
