3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at the Bilbo Baggins Stilwater/12% Imports dinner on Friday November 12, 2010. Vintage was not specified so I’ll assume it’s the beer that’s already listed and not something new. Served in a wine glass.
Pours garnet with a bit of a brownish hue. There is an off white head and some slight lacing. The nose brings caramel and sweet malt with some cherry and fig notes along with a bit of spice.
The flavor is light cherry and earth with some spicing. Almost a bit of rye with some light booze. There’s a little bit of orange marmalade in there as well. Light to medium body with slight oxidation and a few notes of sherry. The carbonation is pretty light but somewhat prickly. A pretty nice winter brew that takes things in a slightly-different direction.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
VERY hazy, chewy, chunky brown with muddy highlights and a thin, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of pit fruits, raisins, figs, cherries, chocolate and a ton of malt and earth - potent. Full-bodied; Deep strong sweet flavour of pit fruits and cherries with a little oak and vanilla topping it all of with a lot of alcohol noticeable. Aftertaste is strong and potent with lingering pit fruit complexity with a little smoked peat coming in near the very end. Overall, a nice and refreshing beer perfect for the wintertime and a very thick, luscious feel. I sampled this 300 mL bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 04-September-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 11-March-2011.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours very dark brown / bronze with a light patchy tan head. The aroma has anise, dark caramel, brown sugar, toffee, Belgian yeast, toasty malt, raisins, figs, molasses and some alcohol. The body is thick, rich and chewy with a moderate amount of carbonation. The taste has much of what’s on the aroma along with some phenolic spice and more brown sugar. The finish is sweet and rich. Decent beer.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a hazy brown with a slight orange hue and a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of sweet grains, caramel, candied sugar and sweet fruits. Flavor starts with very sweet grains and candied sugar with a bit of backing alcohol. A bit too sweet for my liking.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pour is a dark brown with a small white head. Aroma is lots of raisins and brown sugar. Flavor is a heavy raisin juice with some sugar and molasses. Tasty but very heavy with all the dark fruit showing up. Alcohol is no problem.
