UPDATED: MAR 13, 2005 10/11/2004. From the gaudy labelled 500ml bottle purchased at New World. Wow, the label’s claim of "extra hoppy" is accurate. You can smell the hops before you even begin pouring: citrus, wood and forest flowers. The APA pours a beautiful toffee-ish golden colour with a light white head that diminishes quickly to leave only a fluffy film-like head. The aroma is a huge hoppy bouquet citrus fruits and freshly cut pine. The flavour is surprisingly balanced between the pale malt and the big american hops; the woody, resinous properties of these hops nicely bitters after a juicy summer fruit front flavour. All comes wrapped in a full soft mouthfeel. The palate is left with a slightly over bitter feel (the only negative) before dying away cleanly. Everyone compares this one to Limburg Hopsmacker, which I actually think is more like Emerson’s Maris Gold. This is a step above other NZ New World Pale Ales.

Emersons have done it again, a beaut of a beer that exemplifies the style. The long lingering array of hops left the taste in my mouth for quite some time and the malt made me fizz at the bung. Easily one of the best beers I have ever tasted and will ever want to taste.

Cloudy copper in appearance, with a strong but smooth citrussy aroma. first sip was dominated by strong hoppy bitterness, before a soft and delightful palate of moslty cara-malt was revealed. Nice dry finish with some lingering and slightly harsh bitterness. Delicious

Nice hazy orange-amber beer with a nice off white to slight beige froth. Aroma is very original and complex. It has touches of apple shampoo, stone fruits, malts, honey, maple sirup, sweet Bual Madeira and fine hops. The taste is malty and slight dry. There is a fait crispy sourness of lime zest and a good dosis of fine hops. In the afthertaste you can notice touches of pepper, bark, cedar wood and some hints of a cigare case. Very original and tastefull beer.

Golden colour, white head. Some exotic fruits and lime in aroma. Hoppy, refreshing flavour. Quite good bitterness. Medium to full bodied.

Not a very lively aroma for an APA, strongly hoppy, yes, but not fresh and vibrant. I don’t know how old the bottle was so maybe that was the problem. Cascade hops, crystal malt, full body but lacking that vibrant, floral urge of a good fresh balanced APA.

Bottle. Amber with a huge palebrown head, a little cloudy. Aroma hoppy with some malt, also some perfume notes. Taste malt and some hoppy bitterness, good mouthfeel. A nice APA.

Very impressive clear amber long-lasting Head on an amber body. This is one of the best IPA I’ve tasted, as good as Mikeller’s Stateside IPA. It has all the attractive qualities: not too bitter, very well balanced, and a long-lasting very nice aftertaste. I could drinks one or two every day! This is my very first experience of a New Zealand beer, and the least I can say is that it was overwhelmingly positive!

Deep amber with a minimal head. Smooth and hoppy aroma, full of lychees, peaches and some citrus tang. Well balanced, with some freshening bitterness. Good depth and refreshing carbonation - top stuff

Bottle (500ml). Poured a hazy bronze with a dense, off-white, pillow-like head which lasted very well. Aroma was of piney hops with buttery biscuit malts, rock melon, honeydew, apricots and hints of caramel. Flavor was a good piney/citrus (orange) hop bitterness with dry biscuity malts, rock melon, apricots, light notes of caramel and resin in the finish. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a dry/piney mouthfeel and a great finish. A superb brew from Emersons.
