Commercial Description:
We have continued the hoppy amber ale series with the same delicious malt base as the previous amber ale “Motueka Special”. This time, we have blended New Zealand hops with the characteristic American hop “Amarillo”. When Richard sniffed the fermenting brew he detected an amazing potpourri of aromas…mmm… if only this could be bottled as perfume! The malt base is the same as the “Motueka Special” so that you and we brewers can appreciate the difference the hops can make to the malt base. Do the hops compliment the toasty biscuit flavours? Is the bitterness spicy or fruity? Do we really enjoy the beers? Is it a session beer? These are often the questions we ask ourselves. Richard wanted to spread the hops throughout the boil to develop a complex range of hop flavours. The first kettle hops are the powerful “NZ Pacific Gem” with high bitterness followed by a spread of “NZ Pacific Hallertau” and “US Amarillo” towards the end of the boil. A more grunty aroma compared to the previous amber release with a caramelized apricot aroma and biscuit flavours then a long tangy, piney, resiny finish that leaves the mouth coated with hop resins!

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Had it first from a rigger from Regional, next on tap at the Ruakura Campus Club. Two different beers. The first, hoppy, aggressive, grassy, and herbal, with some earthyness and hints of chocolate malt. On tap, the hops had mellowed to a nice background earthiness, and the malt... OH the malt! Delicious bready/toasty character with rich chocolate flavours, and a lingering bitter finish. A brilliant session beer.

Rigger from Regional Wines and Spirits, courtesy of Brad, pours a clear amber with a thin tan head. A light hoppy aroma, grassy, with some chocolate. Chocolate malt, slightly earthy on the palate, with a good hoppy background, with more hops coming through in the finish. Certainly enjoyed drinking this.

Rigger from Regional Wines and Spirits. Poured a lovely deep amber, with a creamy white head. On the nose; bit of malt, caramel, definite hop. Tastes of a somewhat spicy bitter malt, hops, caramel comes in smooth at the end. Flavours linger for a while. Quite bitter. Not bad, liked the last months one better though.
