COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Emerson’s Calamity Jane:

Remember the DBA label back in 9 Grange Street days? For those young lads, the label stood for “Dunedin Brown Ale”. This was a delicious malty brew with plenty of German speciality malts balanced with just enough hops to allow the malt sweetness to be in tune.

The DBA had a good set of devotees that took a shine to the beer until Emerson’s set about registering the trademark name… a gentle tap on the shoulder from a big brewer’s lawyer put a stop to the future of this fine recipe. It doesn’t take much of a guess who that was…

We have resurrected the spirit of the DBA recipe with this malt monster, loaded with plenty of speciality malts and high gravity generosity from the brew crew for this beer to weigh in at 1070 original gravity. The choice of an English Ale yeast has left the beer with a wonderful malty and full bodied beer with a sneaky 6.4% abv.

Take care, as this is a deceptive wee number with the alcohol hidden among the huge malt flavours with ‘just the right bitterness’ to balance things out. Remember the way home!

Cheers
The Emerson’s Brewing Team

Pint, on tap Quite a foamy head that drapes itself seductively around the glass as you drink. Red in colour, started thinking they’d added some ribena to get it that colour. On the nose I would guess belgian, there’s a sweetness and a fruitiness to the yeast. Body is massive, layers and layers of dark choc and black cherries all melding to a lovely sweet complexity. Solid bitter finish to cleanse the palale post malt assault. Huge beer packed with flavour. More please

2L rigger from regional. Pours red/brown with a thin tan head. Aromas of toasted malt, sweet caramel, raisin and orange peel like hop. Initially a mild bitterness, followed by toasted malt, dark fruit and a much stronger bitterness. A little bit of warm, spicy alcohol shows near the finish. The finish is full of burnt toast bitterness, and lasts a while. A nice, but simple brown ale. Perhaps more hop driven flavour could put this up the ranks, but as it stands it is tasty and interesting enough for another rigger.

This is my fave "reserve" in a long time - I’m won over by the great taste and lush body. Looks dark copper-brown with an amazing smooth frothy eggshell head. Some chocolate in the aroma. Taste is big roasty chocolate with caramel sweetness - like an American brown ale. Big malt flavours with a late light bitterness and a little hop tang in the burps! Cracka thirst-quenching body with the roasted wheat malt. VERY very easy to drink - I’m thinking smoked salmon would be nice.
