COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grace Jones Porter is black, full bodied and pushes its way out of the glass with its huge chocolate and coffee overtones. Two classic Porters inspired our ‘Grace’. Fuller’s London Porter has a beautiful chocolate and coffee aroma, and a rich, dark, malt depth. Fritz Maytag’s Anchor Porter out of the US also has an incredible deep ebony, dark roasted malt character and a smoothness that is hard to beat. To achieve Grace’s malt depth we brewed with high proportions of chocolate and crystal malt. Whilst not typical of the porter style, but certainly in her ladyship’s, we used a ‘dash’ of roasted barley to give a wee ‘bite’. Otago oats were used to deliver a rich, almost oily texture and a thick creamy head. New Zealand ale malt makes up the base malt yielding a nice warming 6% porter for any winter’s day and keeps our Excise tax collector smiling ! Out of interest did you know that at 6% abv, about a dollar of your pint of Grace is paid to this happy individual?! But then life is too short for mediocrity, and at 62 this year the real Grace sure put another meaning into the term living life ‘Gracefully’.

Draft at Galbraiths (Auckland). Looks deliciously black with a generous frothy head. The nose was quite subdued. But you couldn’t say the same for the taste. The chocolate and coffee is there, but also a noticeable bacon smokiness. Not sure if this is intended, but it made me happy.

Pint at Pomeroys. Jet black, well structured in the looks dept (does Grace proud!). Cold so not much on the nose but a well built mouthfeel. Lovely chocolate and coffee feel and the oats add body. really nice
