Emerson’s Hoppy2Porter

Are we nearly there… are we nearly there…?

Well… we are pleased to say “Yes!!”

The first Hoppy Porter was very popular, yet the Brew Crew wasn’t sure that all the flavour balance was there. So, we looked hard at the recipe to see where we could get the ingredients to the perfect balance.

We made two changes; another choice of yeast to assist with the mouthfeel, and of course, more of Richard’s favourite sticky green stuff… yes heaps more!

The result is an awesome wall of floral tropical fruit hop aroma clambering out of the beer glass, hitting the nose with sensory pleasure… mmm. Followed by a subtle smokey malt mouthfeel that really complements the hop profile.

Now the question begs, do we sit outside in the sunshine and enjoy this lovely “black Pilsner” or revel in the sunny flavours at the bar in the dark evening?

Cheers

1.25L rigger from the Brewery in Dunedin. Pours black, with ’easily revealed’ ruby edges. Nice tan head. Aromas begin with coffee and dark chocolate mingling (almost fighting) with a fruity hop presence. A hint of grassyness from the mixture of hops and fruity esters. Nice bready yeast with roasted malt. The flavours come off as... strange.. Initially. It’s not as hoppy as I was expecting. However, there is that grapefruit quality of NZ cascade, and lemon-like flavours from the Nelson Sauvin - I used the same combination of hops in my black IPA! Hints of smokiness, which don’t go together very well with the hops... Mouthfeel is a bit watery. A nice beer, but I’m not sure if I like the combination of flavours.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2009 Draught at Galbraiths (Auckland). Chocolate lingers over a base of toasted malt on the palate. The hops are piney, and finishes nice and dry. I didn’t pick up much of the fruit or the smoke, perhaps it was served too cold. Very nice though.

Black with red tinges and tan head. Citrus hop on the nose and in the fmouth. Sweetish coffee-chocolate malt balaces it out and the finish is slightly bitter. Malt character increases as the beer warms.

Pours black, red edges, thin tan head.
Aroma is interesting, a mix of smokey, roast malt with a crisp grassy hop.
Again, a lack of body in the flavour. Smokey flavour is quite present, hops nicely balance the roast malt coffee flavour which make for a very drinkable, oddly refreshing dark beer. There are good flavours here, just no backbone!

I’ll begin by saying that I really wish I could have this side by side with Yeastie Boys PKB09! It’s not that I want to choose which is the better (I think it would be a wash anyway), rather I want to appreciate the differences in craftsmanship in making a similar-concept special brew. This had a terrific topical fruit and citrus hop aroma, eclipsing all else. The palate was similarly dominated by cascade fruity aomatics but lurking beneath was a rich dark maltiness of roast and chocolate. Incredibly smooth and flavourful. Finish is quite bitter.

Citrus hops hover over the glass. There’s a smoothness to the body that lightens the richness of the malt. Has a hoppier nose than the original brew, which i like, and the smoothness again is an improvement on the original. All round, nice drop
