COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Here’s another beer that’s loosely based on a traditional style but being who we are we threw the style guideline off the Brewhouse walkway again. What we didn’t tell Richard is that the brewers got a little loose again! Marchus Maximus is based on the Northern German Pilsner style. Amping up the NZ Hallertau throughout the brew has popped up the bitterness well above usual commercial examples. Again we achieved another brewer’s session beer, 4.4% alcohol, allowing a few more pints than usual after a days brewing. Sixty percent of the malts are Vienna and Munich, the yeast is a German lager yeast and the soft Dunedin soft water has allowed these malts to assert themselves. Toasted malt flavours and a fresh grain character on the mid palate with a crisp, assertive bitterness gives the beer a clean finish that makes ‘Marchus’ a beer that leads to another – and that’s not a bad thing after a days work! We think it’s about now Richard will be wanting to put his gumboots back on to reassert his control over the brew kettle before another brewer goes wild with the hop bag and malt sacks… Cheers The Emersons Brewing Team Original gravity: 1046 Alcohol : 4.4% vol Malts : 60% Munich and Vienna malts Hops : NZ Hallertau Yeast : German Lager

Pint at Pomeroys. Pale yellow/golden in the glass. Fine bubbles, looks pleasant enough but aroma is a bit lemony and sweet. Feels very unbalanced in the mouth, too much malt sweetness then a emphatic lemon finish from the hallertau. Not bad, but not all that great either.

nice appearance, with a rocky head. Initial bready malt then the hop bitterness kicks in. I first thought this was unbalanced, with too much grassy, spicy hop bitterness, but as it warmed and lost a little carbonation it was more drinkable.

Draught at Galbraiths. Pours a picture perfect golden orange. Lime and passionfruit ont he nose. Bready malt on the palate, resiny hops through the middle, and a grassy finish that lingers. I think you guys might be giving this too much of a hard time.

Rated in March. Rigger from the brewery. Appearance is a deep golden, almost an amber hue with not a lot of head. Sweet malt, quite grainy. Fig notes, inconspicuous hops that give off passionfruit aromas. In the mouth is starts off with a nice bitterness, which changes into a grainy, biscuity malt that lasts through to the finish. The strong malt manifests as toffee, while the peculiar hops add a lasting bitterness. Nicely carbonated, but malty sugars leave a film on the palate.

1.25L rigger from the brewery thanks to sdriessen! Pours slightly hazy golden with a white head. A big nose, full of grassy hops. Caramel like malt underlies. Strong and bitter citric hops are dominant in the flavour, crisp hops with a weak caramel malt character. For me the hops were too grassy & strong with very little malt resulting in a hoppy yet unbalanced beer.

Coppery brown, off white head. Aroma is muted, but malty. Complex malt flavours are what this beer is all about, with a rich baked-bread flavour, and hints of cinnamon of all things. There is a slightly unpleasant metallic note in there somewhere, but it’s so fleeting it really doesn’t ruin the beer. I hope this is still on at the Ruakura Campus Club next week. I think it and I need to get better acquainted.
