COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the U.S you can find more than three hundred U.S (or Texan) Brown ales brewed in brewpubs and microbreweries around the country. These ales are not amber coloured lagers but have complex malt characters and aromas with high hop bitterness, flavour and aroma. Of the three hundred versions each has its own trademark character that has in essence the brewer’s ‘signature’.

Our Very Brown Ale is a Colt revolver shot at creating a classic U.S or Texan Brown. Brewed with a selection of caramalts the beer has firm toasted malt complexity and dark malt character on the mid palate.

The Brewer’s Reserve range is one of experimentation, the chance to brew with ingredients we have always wanted to use. Very Brown ale uses the US Chinook hop as its bittering hop – big alpha acid, big resins! Not a hop to be taken lightly. And it definitely proved itself in this beer – really shining through the malts lending a crisp assertive bitterness.

Enjoy Very Brown; it won’t last long!

Cheers

Loads and loads of chocolate taste with a slight huskiness on the back of the throat. Mellows after a few sips to a rich taste that after a pint you fancy a few more of.

Bottle. Roasty malt that’s a little bit chocolate. The hops add a touch of grass and pine, the palate is just lightly bittering. A beer you would - metaphorically - like to sit on. The burps are especially delicious!

The guest tap at the Twisted Hop in Christchurch July 4th. Chocolate, brown sugar, and hints of dark fruits with a mild hop presence in the finish. Not the big hop kick I was expecting. A nice little brew, solidly made, but not the most adventurous or outstanding offering from Emerson’s.

Rigger from Regional Wines & Spirits. Pours... very brown, almost black. It looks deep ruby when held to the light. Tan head, thins to almost nothing. Aroma is very hoppy. Passionfruity hops are strong and underlying is a light chocolate maltiness and a bit of pine. Go American hops. When warmed for a bit, chocolate notes are foremost in the flavour. Pine and passionfruit are detectable briefly, but what makes this beer unlike anything I’ve tasted is how there is little bitterness until the finish. The finish explodes with a huge bitterness, like a time delay bomb. This very separate bitterness is interesting, but takes away from the drinkability. But it gives me hop burps, which is freakin awesome.

Reminds me very much of Theakston’s Old Peculier, though less balanced. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind for this beer, but the flavours just didn’t quite meld together. The harsh, astringent bitterness dominates the finish to the point that it’s all you can taste after the first few sips. That sounds worse than it is. I had a second (and third) pint and let them warm up, and more juicy malt, and cocoa came through, ganging up on the hops a little and helping to pull it back into the realm of decent. I’ll drink more, but won’t rave about it.

once it warmed up it was a tasty balance of rich malt and piney hops. A nice, orthodox american brown, but lacked personality or distinction.

Aroma is of strong, resinous hops, some malt. Not a lot in the nose when from the tap. Would probably be much more enjoyable bottle conditioned and warmer... Flavours are a sweet kind of astringent, bitter hops - from the middle to the finish. This one is kind of similar to Moa’s 5 hop winter ale - but easier to drink. Lots of peppery spice, chocolate, and some coffee. Not my favourite sort of beer, and unfortunately I haven’t tasted many American ales to compare it to. The finish is kind of astringent, and I’m not a big fan of this type of bitterness that is so separate from the rest of the flavour.
