COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Richard decided to put a portion of oatmeal stout into a Central Otago pinot noir barrel to mature for several months then bottle conditioned. A subtle hint of oak but the main character of the brew is the fruity, berry flavours and aromas from the pinot, blended with the silky, chocolatey flavour from the oatmeal stout.

Pours black with ruby edges. Aromas of hops, some toffee and malt. Initial flavour is quite fruity probably from the pinot, hops and chocolate come in after. Theres quite a strong alcohol flavour for a 5% A nice variation on stout.

500ml bottle from Beervana. Inky black, reddish hues and good persistent lacing in the head. In the mough it’s tannins with faint char hints and a sourness that wants to sweeten at the finish but can’t quite make it. A grape juice type feel in the nose like a cheap Presbyterian Church Communion. Aged wood and musty carpets abound, just need the sermon and a Hymn to finish

Bottle, pours a near-black dark brown with a frothy beige head. Sweet, toffeeish aroma, raisins, and a finishing whiff of chocolate. A decent amount of Oatmeal Stout chocolate on the palate, and slightly nutty. A good amount of the raisiny pinot comes through in the swallow, and a good hop bitterness. A like the way the 4 months in the Pinot Noir barrels brings a sweet and fruity contrast to the Oatmeal Stout (always one of my favourite Emersons brews).

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2008 Really fruity nose....from the barrels obviously but the flavour is lost on the palate, its a bit dry and woody and slightly tart, thin palate....
