3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Dogbrick (4839) - Columbus, USA - SEP 30, 2009
Sample at the Palatine brewpub. The beer pours a flat black color with a medium creamy khaki head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and cocoa. Medium, smooth body with flavors of malt, roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate. The finish is sweet chocolate at first with a mildly bitter coffee aftertaste. Straightforward and an alright Stout overall.

Tap. Pours opaque with a large, creamy brown head, long retention with spotty lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, roast, chocolate), no hops, and light esters with notes of oatmeal. Flavor is malt dominant with chocolate and oat. Medium body and carbonation, low warmth with a sweet finish.

Sample at the Downer’s Grove location. Pours a clear dark brown with a fluffy tan nitro head. Aroma is of a typical nitro: roasty and metallic. Flavor is creamy vanilla and chocolate at first with a roasty coffee finish. Thought it was gonna be mediocre to subpar after the aroma, but the flavor was solid.

Pint served at the Downer’s Grove brewpub. Delivered to the table a cascading tan tone to end up the darkest of browns. The head was dark tan, thick, frothy, and lasting. The lacing was thick, creamy and clingy. The aroma was a pleasant roasted coffee, with some creaminess to the nose and later in the mouthfeel. The flavor was also malty, with some smokey dryness and a touch of baker’s chocolate. A light hop bitterness was present to the finish. After experiencing the rich look and fullness in the aroma, I found the body to be thinner than I would have expected although decently light to medium. A good stout none the less.

even without the nitro id classify this as a dry irish stout. had the slippery mouthfeel id expect for that style, though with much more emphasis on chocolate. even the head was tinged brown which was nice. nitro didnt cascade throughout the body though the head itself lingered until my beer was empty. bit of the chocolate shake thing going on here, more prevelant then any coffee undertones which are there in minimum. wasnt too fond of the body however, espically if this is not considered to be a dry irish stout. oats were lost, i didnt know this was oatmeal based until it was gone and i read it on the menu.

Draft at Emmett’s, Downers Grove. Menu still shows this as an oatmeal stout, and it certainly seems like it to me. Nice nitro pour yields a black body, paler at first from a brief Guinness cascade. Cappuccino colored foam shows dark swirls. Nice mocha coffee smell presented in a proper English pint glass instead of a shaker. Sweet creamy taste and texture to start, thanks to oatmeal and nitro. Some roast coffee astringency at first, but it goes away. Thin nitro mouthfeel makes this go down nice and easy, keeping me from getting filled up. Maintains a milk chocolate impression all the way down. Yeah, I’m rating this higher than the first two. It just hit me at the right time of evening.
