Sampler pour on tap at Haymarket (Chicago, IL). Another ILL rating for me. Pours a darker amber hue, some copper glow on the edges, glowing rich body and light haze overall. A fuller frothy offwhite head sits atop and laces well, cakes and sticks around. Aromas are mellow, offering some lemon and earthy hops, florals and grass mingle with a gentle yeasty spice, bread, rye, and pale malts. A bit bland on the nose. Initial is rye up front, nothing else to say as it gets a touch sweet and toasty, hitting with dry lemons and florals, growing grass. A distinct toasty sweetness as it picks up a touch of body. Middle is a bit sticky, as the malt gives a kick and then backend dries up a bit more with a lot of orange, mellow grapefruit, and earthy hops. A bit sweet for me overall. An ok offering that finishes off on a better note. Ok, but something I’d pass on for other local hoppy offerings. Maybe it’s old?

Light amber with modest, creamy, off-white head / Bright nose of citus, weed, brown sugar, and pine / Light to medium body, a touch watery, moderately sweet, chewy, and biting, with good finish / Bright flavors of rye, pine, orange, and grapefruit / Luscious flavor over top of body that could use a little bolstering. Good stuff.

Draft... Clear light orange, big but watery tan head, good retention... nice aroma of rye balanced against citrus, oranges mostly... tastes really good, rye, grass, orange peel, a bit of a hot generic finish but count me a fan

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Narnad (1147) - Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA - AUG 20, 2009
Arrived to the table at the Dundee location a dark copper color, semi-hazy and a thin but dense white head. Aroma has a lot of pine and a lighter lemon hops note, very light rye and caramel malt nose. Flavor has an "in your face" pine punch with a very heavy leafy bitterness, light lemon citrus transition and then a smooth rye malt presence in the middle. The rye seems to be hiding behind the strong hops note a bit too much. The brew finishes with a light sweet malt ending. Med density, low carbonation and a modest amount of lacing but nothing to rave about. The brew as a whole was great but it’s a bit rough to find the rye behind the strong hops notes in this brew.

Draught at the West Dundee location, called Rye Pale Ale. Appears dark, slightly murky amber with a soapy off-white head. Aroma is piney with a spicey rye character. Hoppy sweet citric and pine flavor with a mild rich rye spiciness. Nice piney lingering bitterness. Medium bodied. Similar to the Victory but with added body and malt character.
