(Rating #3089)
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 probstblueribbon (1967) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 21, 2008
Sampled at the brewpub. AU15/08.
App.: Dirty golden, clear, remnants of a white head.
Aroma: Very piney hops, light apricots, light caramel.
Palate: Medium body and medium-full carbonation.
Flav.: Grapefruit and pine hops, peaches, a touch of toffee; dry with substantial kick.
A touch out of balance, but I like the bitterness.
1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Glouglouburp (4784) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 11, 2008
In short: A dry and harsh Pale Ale.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Partly cloudy golden body, small off-white head
In long: Timid nose of typical fruity caramel. A very dusty and dry beer. Lacking in malt. Almost no body or caramel to balance a dry dusty bitter finish. Like biting a very dry orange/citrus fruit skin that you picked up in a dusty basement. Long bitter finish, but not a flavourful bitterness, just a harsh bitterness. For a beer that should be enjoyed by the pint I had more than enough of a 6oz sample, that’s not a good thing. That Empire’s success is only match by that of Enron.
2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Lubiere (6988) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 15, 2007
A golden amber pale ale with a thin white head. Aroma is a bit more hoppy than the Amber. In mouth, a boring caramel malt with unbalanced hops, watery, short and astringent, with light acid notes in finale. On tap at Empire, Nov. 17, 2007.
