4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Glouglouburp (5562) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 15, 2012
In short: A complex big fruity chocolaty stout with a great barrel character
How: Bottle 375ml capped, at Bishops Arms Järntorget, Göteborg Sweden
The look: Black body topped by a tan ring of foam
In long: Nose has a big rich malty aroma and a complex barrel character, like a mix of many types of barrel aging (wine, whisky, virgin oak, more…). Complex big beer aroma here. Taste is smooth velvety rich blackened malts with the expected usual suspect of black chocolate, vanilla, black liquorice and friends. There is also a nice fruity complexity that includes blackberries and dark grapes. But is it is the complex barrel character that makes this beer stand out. The barrel aging is not overdone, it doesn’t overwhelmed the beer but it adds a lot of subtleties (wood, fruits, port wine, more…). This is not “another barrel aged imperial stout”, this beer stands out from the crowd. I’m really sad to see this is now retired, is there a Make A Wish foundation with a mission to help desperate beer geeks to reconnect with beers that are no longer in production? There should be.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Svesse (5197) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - NOV 9, 2012
(Bottle, bought at Ölbutikken, Copenhagen, a couple of years ago) Pitch black colour with brief, brown head. Roasted, malty, fruity nose with dark chocolate, strong sweet coffee, raisins, prunes, molasses, liquorice and vinous hints of port wine. Malty, roasted taste with notes of espresso, dark chocolate, cacao, liquorice, molasses, burnt sugar, raisins, oak wood and warming hints of port in a long, warming finish with a generous cacao bitterness. Full body, thick, almost oily mouthfeel. Quite sweet. Solid and quiet impressive. Hardly subtle, but quite lovely.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 hellbilly (3249) - scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA - JUL 31, 2012
bottle from nick on 1/22/12. #4.
almost black - red tinted dark brown with a tannish head.
aroma and flavor are way oxidized... but with redeeming qualities of high roast, tires, vitamin pills, cherry kool-aid, raisins and lots of sweet sticky red wine.
it is thick and slick but not undrinkable... i imagine this was amazing fresh. 7/4/7/3/15
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 _angst_ (1745) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - JUN 25, 2012
375 ml bottle bought @ Bishops Arms Örebro. Pours oily pitch black with a small dark chocolate brown head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet with roasted malts, wood, red wine, alcohol, milk chocolate, dark roast coffee, prunes, overripe grapes, orange peal, vanilla, cereal, liquorice root, resin and very subtle hints of oxidation. Taste is sweet, bitter and sour with bitter chocolate, prunes, overripe grapes, wood, dark roast coffee, pine, heavily roasted malts, burnt wood, sweet dark bread, lemon zest, liquorice fudge, red berries, burnt sugar, wet soil, port wine, hints of moss and resin and very subtle hints of metal. Mouthfeel is intense, sticky sweet, boozy and full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with port wine, wood, wet soil, red berries, burnt wood, bitter chocolate and coffee. Amazing smell supported by a solid imperial stout with lots of port and red wine notes adds up to a very good beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 madmitch76 (9867) - , Essex, ENGLAND - JUN 5, 2012
31st December 2012 Opaque black beer, short lived dark chocolate coloured head. Soft palate. Rich dark malt with unsweet dark chocolate and repressed dark fruits. I know Port Wine pretty well and Niepoort Ports tend to have some Sherry characteristics, so no big surprise to find some Sherry character from the barrel. As the beer warms up the nose opens up and reveals dark chocolate and the flavours integrate more. Minerals in the finish.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 RasmusOtt (869) - Aalborg, DENMARK - MAY 13, 2012
Pours completely black with no head. Aroma is dark berries, i especially get black currants along with figs, cocoa beans, fruity coffee, sweet port notes, vanilla, oatmeal, brown sugar and I feel the molasses sweetness. Taste is figs, vanilla, sweet port notes, savery, caramel, coffe, oatmeal thickness, dark dried fruits, molasses and full body! Very good "take your time" imperial stout.
