COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a bold, malty, smoky Scotch Ale. It pours a deep amber brown. It was quite cloudy at the time of bottling but will clarify as it ages. The nose is full of smoky toffee notes. The taste opens with sweet malt and spice, then the alcohol comes up with a light residual sweetness on the finish. A balanced smoky flavor is in this beer from start to finish, although it never is the dominant character. It was brewed with 2-Row, Biscuit, Dark Crystal, Amber, Peated, Caramunich and Wheat malt. It is hopped early with Hallertau Tradition and late with Hallertau Hersbrucker. We fermented DR8 with a traditional Scotch Ale yeast. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45°F or warmer. This beer was inspired by Phillip Kaufman’s winning entry in the 2009 Big Batch Brew Bash.

Tasted on 8/12/11 from a 12oz bottle obtained in a trade. Pours a murky, dark burnt orange with an average, but very dense, beige head that slowly recedes to rocky lace, leaving thick residue along the inside of the glass. The nose is super malty with caramel, bread, chocolate, a creamy aroma, and some lightly nutty and vegetal notes as well. The flavor is lightly sweet with very strong caramel, bread malt, and the same lightly nutty and vegetal notes from the nose. The body is full and creamy with light, but still stinging carbonation and a long, super malty, lightly nutty, and creamy finish.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of cavie. Thanks Travis. Dark orange brown appearance with a tan head. Somewhat boozy, toffee, caramel, roasty malty aroma. Strong roasty, caramel malty, a bit smoky, slightly toasty, toffee, mildly boozy flavor. Strong flavor, fairly strong finish. Roasty caramel aftertaste.

12oz bottle. Pour was a nice caramel color typical of the style. Pretty good lacing. Compliments end there. Nose was pretty bad once you get passed the malty, peat, and slight smoke. Heavy medicinal aroma typical of band aids. Taste followed the nose with an even heavier medicinal band aid presence. Not as heavy as HOTD Adam but still needed to drain pour over half of it
