Bottle. Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma is heavy and complex; fat, malty, vanilla, dark fruits, fudge, molasses. A bit cloying, but very nice. Flavour is sweet! Fat, roasted, dark fruits, tangy, pepper, chocolate and molasses. Finish is more of the same with an added note of sweet Finnish liquorice and an alcohol burn lingering. Carbonation is great: prickly in just the right way against the heavy body. Overall a great beer; complex and very well-balanced, even if very sweet and somewhat cloying. 30.03.12.

Bottle from trade with Michael (misterburd) -- thanks a ton, buddy! 2015 vintage (19.9%) The label says "Contains Alcohol" front and center, and boy do they mean it. This is so boozy that you can smell the alcohol burn as soon as it gets within 5 feet of you, but there’s so much flavor that it doesn’t taste especially hot. Tons of chocolate and coffee flavor, like a double version of the biggest imperial stout you’ve ever tried, mixed with a strong bourbon flavor that pairs really well with the alcohol warmth. Fantastic beer.

Wajoo 19%. Zwart, geen schuim. Erg alcoholisch in geur en smaak, maar wel op een lekkere manier.

Bottle, shared with ktwse and kryon79 at Himmeriget. Pours an intense black with no head. Swirling it around leaves oily black lacings on the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, molasses, marinated raisins, vanilla, bourbon, oak, leather. Taste is dark chocolate bitterness meets caramel sweetness and a pleasant alcohol burn towards the end. Mouthfeel is very smooth and velvety with almost no carbonation

2014 reserve. Pours black with low tan head. Aroma of booze, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate... I want to make love to this beer... Taste is fiery rich bourbon, tons of alcohol, super sweet. This one can probably sit for 50 years... Body is rich and creamy with soft carbonation. Warming alcohol finish that lingers until the cows come home...

Much-hyped imperial stout, hard to obtain so thanks a lot to Bart for putting this on the menu at the American beer tasting in Bruges. Thinnish, off-white, fairly quickly dissipating head, black colour with translucent burgundy edges. Powerful and enticing bouquet of all kinds of things: chocolate liqueur, kahlua, brown rum, chestnuts, vanilla, chocolate sauce, bourbon, wet leather, cappuccino, espresso, old port wine, some varnish-like solvents but inconspicuously integrated into this impressive whole. Very ’noble’ and well-controlled yet intense candied sweet onset, Belgian chocolates and Liège pear syrup, balanced with a soft background sourishness and beautifully restrained ’meaty’ umami; soft carbo and evidently very thick, oily, creamy mouthfeel; thick layers of caramelly, nutty and lovely chocolatey malts, sweet in onset but turning gently and ’rounded’ bitter in the end, fondant chocolate and coffee liqueur, some peppery hops for balance and the expected ’force’ of cognac- and rum-like alcohol, but somehow this alcohol, however strong, manages to avoid intrusive astringency. I had a rum barrel aged version before but this one is much better, more to the point and less tiringly boozy; this deserves its cult status to the full.
