The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Pours a deep plum red with a light tan head. Aromas of oaky vanilla, cranberries, cherries, hints of peppery barnyard, and slight acidity. Perfect medium light body, that finishes crisp and blows your taste buds into heavenly oblivion with flavors of: sour cherries, cranberries, blackberries, raspberries, lots of balanced acidity (lactic and just enough acetic), tons of tannins from the wood, and a bit of barnyard all balanced out by some residual malty sweetness. In my opinion this is the best Flemish Red I’ve ever had and one of my favorite beers. This would be killer with goat cheese, cheesecake, foie gras, or lobster.

Flaska från SB. Rödbrun med obefintligt skum. Mycket svag doft av körsbär och syrlighet. Smaken är syrlig med inslag av körsbär, vinäger och röda vinbär.

Balsamic, salt and tart nosefull. Packs a punch. An ugly beer, no head, but who cares this thing is complex, tart, salty, sweet and refreshing. Sours confuse me and that I like.

Head disappears fast, nice colour. A: Cherry, tobacco, quince T: tart pear, some bitterness like zest...?, lingonberry, some toffee. Laudable beer!

330ml bottle served in a snifter. A: Pours a magnificent amber color forming a small yellow head with low retention and only spotty yellow and bit molasses lacings in the glass S: Grapes! Vinegar, toffee, caramel malts, cherries, oak, more grapes, flowery hops... T: Sour and slightly sweet upfront. Becomes quickly, dry, acid and funky. Strong notes of grapes, toffee, caramel malts, cherries, oak. Reminds a Cabernet Sauvignon wine, and I’m serious! Metallic and a bit earthy end M: Light body. Medium carbonation. Lingering in the tongue. Very sour and fruity aftertaste O: Excellent drinkability. Excellent Flanders Red Ale... [ BA Review @ 6/6/2014 ]

Pours mostly clear deep amber brown (some particulate) with a fat finger of dense light beige head diminishing gradually to a thin cap, light patchy lacing (4/5). Nose is dominated by sour cherry, with a hint of other berries and oaky wood, balsamic vinegar (9/10). Taste is mild sweet, moderately intense sour, just a hint of umame (8/10). Medium to full body, moderate to prickly sustained carbonation, with a tart, dry finish (5/5). Now that’s what I’m talking about! I do love me a good Flemish red, and that’s a good Flemish red. Lovely sour on the nose and the tongue, finishing tart and crisp. Well worth the inevitable heartburn! (18/20)

Bottle. Hazy deep amber color with a thin off-white head. Sour aroma of berries, dried fruits and live yeast. Sweet and sour, slightly acidic taste. Medium body. Very well balanced.

330ml bottle from St Veronus. Deep brown red body with minimal to non-existent off white head. Sour cherry, light berries, wood, not much comes through past the intensity of the cherry. Very tart in taste, however not overbearing whatsoever. Very wine like, very minimal lacing. Extremely full bodied and complex.

Keg @ Mekong. Hazy deep amber pour with a small head. Aroma of raspberry donuts, salt, light vinegar and wood. Flavor has a string tart raspberry jam character. Salty/sweet profile. Abrupt crisp finish. Medium body, active carbonation. Delicious.

"stumbled upon this on tap at Pangea in Sac w/o realizing it was a wishlist brew! quite sour in smell and taste, with a lot of apple vinegar and sweet cherries and oak. pretty good example of a flemish red. somewhere in the 5% range, but alcohol is definitely irrelevant with such flavorful brews. good stuff."
