Sample at Jackie O’s Barrel Aged Beer Fest 2010. Pours black with thin to medium brown head. Aroma is bourbon, coffee, vanilla, and toasted malts. Flavor is much the same as the aroma, with some alcohol warmth. Can’t wait to try the bottles I have once they have some age on them!

Pours pitch black with a half finger beige head that quickly settles into a thin ring.  Sporadic spots of lacing left behind. Sweet bourbon aroma with a decent barrel presence.  Some toasted oak, vanilla, sweeet bourbon, coconut, chocolate, caramel malt, toffee and coffee bean.  Bourbon barrel nicely integrated. On the lighter end of medium bodied with a boozy bourbon barrel presence that lingers over the sweeter malt notes into slightly dry finish.  Boozy but not too hot with lots of bourbon flavor. Some dry oak and vanilla but mostly boozy bourbon overpowering things.  Underneath there is some roasted malt complimenting the dry oak.  Hints of toast, dark chocolate, coffee bean and oatmeal.  Sweet and boozy with a very strong bourbon flavor that overpowers everything else.  That being said it never gets too hot but it’s still thin, watery and one dimensional.

Out of a clever little jug-growler at DLD. Not 100% sure on the vintage but maybe 2009 was written on the growler tag. Somehow I’ve tried various versions of this but never the base beer. This is a great beer all by itself without any special treatments.

pour is dark brown with deep tan head. The nose is light, lots of caramel, sugary booze and a touch burnt wood. The taste is bigger and rather sweet. The bourbon is laced in well but it falls off a touch mid palate. As it warms some vanilla comes through, notes of milk chocolate, with a fair bit of roasted malt. There is some coffee bitterness in back. the body holds up better than the rum barrel aged version.

On tap at the brewpub, served in a snifter. Real dark brown-red color. Nice brown (clear?) head, fading to almost minimal, leaving little lace. Awesome really dark chocolate strong coffee aroma. I love the addition of the bourbon aromas in this. It’s strange and woody, but not bite-y or overpowering. Nice, lighter carbonation. Powerful aftertaste. Appropriately boozy. I normally don’t care for bourbon-barrel aged stuff, but this might be the best bourbon-barrel-aged RIS I’ve ever had.

Strykzone (3132) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - JAN 28, 2012
Sampled at an esbls tasting. Dark with a nice tan head that has some red in it. I smell vanilla and bourbon. Each sip starts with Bourbon, then sour hop notes, and then vanilla. The finish is more sour.

Bomber thanks to jrallen34.
Appearance : Deep black with almost no head.
Aroma : Nice vanilla and bourbon with coffee and dark chocolate. Lots of coffee.
Taste : Coffee with bourbon. Nice vanilla and chocolate. Very nice finish with notes of vanilla and lots of coffee. Not much alcohol.
Overall : Very well made. Bourbon is very well integrated and not overpowering. You can still taste the roasted malt underneath with no problem. Very tasty and well balanced. Nice persistent finish. A great example of a good Bourbon BA Imperial Stout.

Lubiere (6988) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 13, 2011
A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, nice bourbon vanilla chocolate, licorice, soy sauce, briney, very nice. In mouth, a complex mix of mocha coffee and chocolate, woody notes, super warming alcohol, licorice, vanilla, beautiful. Bottle from Boutip, shared with GRM, Probstk and Ian, Dec. 2 2011.

Palate: Medium+ body, relaxed effervescence. Flav.: Brown sugar, molasses, brine, soy sauce, rich fruitiness, some caramel, green peppercorns, less alcohol than the nose, a little vanilla; sweet with a little less alcohol and a long, mouth-coating, molasses, dark malt finish.
