Dark reddish-brown colour with slight head and little lacing. Aromas and flavors of bread, chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Fairly short finish.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 574deadzone (570) - North Central, Indiana, USA - JUN 12, 2013
Pours dark brown/black with ruby highlights and a thinner khaki head that settles to a ring and leaves some spotty lace. Nice complex nose of roasted malts, toast, cherries, molasses, a light smokiness, and some asparagus of all things. Fairly sweet but quite bitter, probably more on the bitter side which is cool. Perhaps a light tartness. Full bodied, round, fair carb, with a long toasty smoky savory finish. Very nice brew. Easy to drink, but best savored. Yum.

Dark brown pour with a tight, tan head. Toasted bread hits you right away with a bit of dark fruits vanilla. Taste progresses from a malty vanilla character to a bitter dark chocolate to a dry, smoky roast, finishing with some subtle hops. Full and creamy on the palate. Phenomenal.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 brief_smile (106) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - JUN 5, 2013
Pours a very dark ruby, with a fluffy tan head. Aroma: prominent roasted malt notes, dark fruits, bread, vanilla. Taste: roasted malts, sticky dark fruits, molasses, liquorice, mild coffee, touch of smoke. Well balanced sweetness in the finish. Wonderfully smooth and thick on the tongue. Great doppelbock.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Alpha10 (114) - Ontario, CANADA - MAY 31, 2013
2013/05/31 - Pours a dark cola brown with a mahogany tint and a thin, tan head. Nose is vanilla, coffee, dark fruits, molasses and roasted malts with a feint smokiness. Taste is similar to nose with a sweet aftertaste. Mouthfeel is creamy and very smooth. Lives up to the hype.

For me, this is a quintessential beer experience. Unmatched taste and texture like drinking milk. A beer to savor one or two. Too rich to drink more than that at one sitting.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 fezzy (50) - California, USA - MAY 29, 2013
Dark brown dopple with a ruby tinge and a thin tan head. Lots of malt and bock yeast on the nose, which describes the backbone of the taste, malts coming on very roasty but not burnt. Hops are delicate and hard to detect, but balance for great palatability. Woodsy tobacco notes as well, some cocoa, and a hint of dark fruit. Clean and drinkable while rich all at once. A classic exemplification of the style.

I expected a tad more power and heft. Not a bad beer, I just don’t think I’m a fan of the authentic style.
