Celebrator has a creamy head of tight bubbles contrasting beautifully with its profound dark robe. It is full-bodied and velvety from half a year’s aging. Although it is strong, it is not overpowering. There is a wonderful and complex balance between the various malts, the alcohol and the subtle hops. A complex fruitiness of roasted malt and whole hop flowers make Celebrator great as a party drink with friends and family at celebrations. Despite its richness, it has a faintly smoky dryness in the finish.

330 ml bottle from Whole Foods Market, Coddingtown, Santa Rosa, CA. Pours a dark brown/burgundy color and a fine long lasting tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, rye, Pumpernickel, pistachios, hazelnuts, toasted grains, prunes, licorice and dark olives. Amazing. Taste is wonderful: Roasted sweetness and dark fruits shine on over an earthy, bready taste in the back. Incredible and refined! Towards the end I even feel a fig flavor counterpoint. Roastiness prevails over the caramel sweetness making this one a fantastically balanced Doppelbock. Medium to big body, not as bold as, let’s say, Andechser’s, but more refined. Alcohol almost unnoticeable. Smooth and silky in the palate. World-class and the best German beer I’ve tasted so far.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2016 Bottle From hopfen und Malz in Berlin. Pours dark Red. smells of Sweet spice with hints of caramell. Great full typical dark beer taste. In the aftertaste it has the reminescence of soggy cornflakes. A great doppelbock

Pours an average size tan head. Has a dark brown appearance, almost black. Has good lacing and average retention. Dark roasted malt aromas dominate, sort of yeast with some cocoa. Flavours are thick and rich in dark malts, with mochaa and coffee notes. Seems like alcohol is faintly noticeable. A hint of chocolate rounds out the whole. Mouthfeel is average. has some bitterness and has a bit of spicy notes in aftertaste. Pretty good stuff.

Tolles Bier!

Dark, bordering on black. Aroma of burnt caramel, coffee and roasted, bready malt. Taste of dried fruit, cocoa and coffee bean. Accompanied by a soft caramel sweetness and some lingering bitterness towards the end. Very balanced. Palate is oily with less than medium carbonation which for this style is quite fitting. One of the few doppelbocks you can drink more than two in one sitting. Or three.

Hyvin tumma olut.

Ayinger’s Celebrator is supposedly the best they come in this style. It’s dark in colour and looks like cola, but you can see that it’s actually a beautiful ruby red where the light shines through. In the aroma, I picked up on primarily prunes, raisins, dried fruit in general, as well as molasses/brown sugar. Beneath this is a mixture of bread, malts, honey, and caramel. It produced a two finger beige coloured head. The taste definitely reminded me of prunes, dried fruit, blackcurrant, nuts too and cocoa in the background. It has a mature, thick sweetness especially on entrance and goes into a roasty bitterness. Quite tingley at the end which leaves a smokey savoury-ness after swallowing. Though it’s not my personal favourite flavour palate, I have to say that it’s really very good. Can definitely see how this is a nice choice to serve on an occasion.
