Smashed Pumpkin is a big-bodied beer with a light coppery orange color and pleasing aroma of pumpkin and nutmeg. The OG and final Alc./Vol. provide the structure and body. Pale Ale, Wheat and Light Munich Malts combine with the natural tannin in pumpkin and the delicate spiciness of Willamette and Hallertau Hops to balance the sweetness of the fruit. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Smashed Pumpkin pairs well with sharp cheeses, nuts, lamb, hearty stews and desserts like flan or pumpkin pie. Chefs find this an excellent beer to cook with in dishes such as braised short ribs.

Smells like cinnamon and nutmeg. Tastes sweet and great. Finish is cinnamon and spicy. This is fantastic for a pumpkin ale

I poured a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass. There was no freshness date and it cost $9.99 ($0.45 per ounce).

Appearance: Beautiful, glowing orange hue over a clear body. Plenty of visible carbonation. Pours to a large, eggshell, foamy head which retains and laces somewhat well.

Smell: Typical pumpkin beer aroma, though on the spicier side. Notes of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg dominate.

Taste: Shipyard is well known for their regular pumpkin brew “Pumpkinhead,” a beer which I’ve always said tastes more like pumpkin soda. While it’s not bad, it’s not great; but the same can be said for “Smashed Pumpkin,” which is essentially just a scaled-up version of that beer (in my opinion, at least).

The palette is pretty typical of a pumpkin brew: strong notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and especially ginger. There’s no distinct malt character and certainly nothing in the way of hops. A consistent sweetness from start to finish, with a soda-like taste on the back end. I could definitely do with less ginger and more of a pumpkin pie taste (this straddles the border between pumpkin potpourri and pumpkin pie). When you pay $10 for a bottle of 9% ABV beer, you have expectations of robustness and complexity. And while perfectly satisfying as far as taste goes, it doesn’t quite deliver on a bang-for-the-buck level.

Drinkability: For such a heady brew, Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin is remarkably light on its toes. The mouthfeel is thin, but well-carbonated with a consistent crispness to the last drop. It’s comfortable in the mouth and going down without any discernable alcohol taste or warmth considering its 9% ABV potency. A slightly dry and spicy aftertaste lingers momentarily, which is fine. I had no trouble drinking the entire bottle myself. This definitely could be paired with autumn meals without issue.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2014 Clear orange with a thin head. Light pumpkin nose. Body is medium. Slight spice in the finish. Not the best example I’ve had.

65 cl bottle, 9%. Obvious orange color, hazed. Nose of melon, banana, watermelon, apricot, peach. Aroma instead is a fuckload of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger and ealr grey tea. Taste is mostly sweetish with some bitterness balance in the finish. Medium body, low carbonation. Alcoholic finish, spiced, fairly dry. I find this one very sticky and difficult to throw down. Sadly annoying, lots of promises right off the cap, then failure in the mouth.

Bottle at Craig’s. It pours deep amber with a decent white head. The nose is sweet, sugary, butternut squash, pumpkin, candy and veg. The taste is bitter-sweet, pumpkin, squash, some acidity, candy and sugar with a dry, sort if sweet finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Pretty sweet and sugary... Not for me.

Pour is clear copper orange with a bubbly off white head. Nose is heavy spice, light pumpkin, fair bit stale grain. Taste is very strong pumpkin spice, lighter grain and less stale. Soft carb, medium body and creamy palate.

It has a deep amber body with good clarity. It also has a nice level of visible carbonation which supports a good creamy off white head. This head has good retention and makes for lots of lovely slick lacing on the glass. The aroma has loads cinnamon and other pumpkin pie spices over a delicate squash and malt mixture. There is a nice mixture of pie spice like cinnamon, ginger, and a touch of clove up front and throughout. There is also a good squash-like (pumpkin) flavor note with pie crust like malt. As it warms the cinnamon and spice come out a bit more. Its 9% ABV is also noticeable and adds another level of complexity and warmth. The body has a solid medium to full body with pleasant lively texture. The carbonation helps to keep thing from getting sticky or cloying as there is a good level of sweetness. Hops are barely noticeable but do offer just a touch of leafy/herbal bitterness towards the finish.

Pours a nice deep copper color with off-white head. Pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, caramel malts, and some sweetness on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with more pumpkin.

Poured from a bottle, San Diego. Sweet, liquor aroma. Tastes sorry of like bourbon. Coppery with a mild head. Not a fan of this one.
