4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 ljay6880 (473) - , USA - SEP 17, 2011
750ml bottle served in a tulip. Pour is cloudy mahogany with two fingers of kaki head that had decent retention and a slight show of lacing. Nose is bourbon, oak, figs, molasses, caramel, booze, bubble gum, and hops. Taste is an immediate blast of bourbon/oak/figs/molasses done to the tune of decadence. This is quickly met with an odd bubble gum and hop pallet, that contradicts the original pallet with quite a ferocity. The finish is a choppy watered marriage with different aspects sticking out at different times, depending on how the tide swelled. This is truly and amazing barley wine, one I place in the top 3 (Gratitude and barrel aged Old Toad) that I could only accurately place if I did a side by side of the three. Truly amazing!
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 bmerz (229) - New York, USA - MAR 31, 2012
Bottle. Nice brown with reddish hues and an offwhite head and lace that lasts. Aroma is surprisingly thin with light sweet smelling apple, vanilla, spice, bourbon, malt. Flavor is slighly tart whiskey soaked spiced apple and pear. Barley wine toffee notes are not strongly expressed. It ends quickly as the sticky medium body dries with some tannins. It is fairly tame for a whiskey bourbon barrel aged. An accomplished beer for sure but it does speak to me.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 daknole (5859) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - MAR 6, 2012
Brown/reddish pour, light cream colored head. Aroma is sweet and bready, malty, bourbon, golden raisins, corn syrup. Flavor is very sweet and rich. Decadent vanilla, toffee, and a nice alcohol warmth. Very good stuff.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 boFNjackson (2935) - Portland, Oregon, USA - FEB 25, 2012
Bottle... Poured cloudy, deep brown with a bubbly, light tan head. Very sweet, dark cocoa and toffee. Mildly bitter with strong barrel character and whiskey alcohol warmth. Woody with oak and more and more whiskey character. Apples, figs, mild hops, malted toasted sweetness. A tasty sipper.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 thornecb (3098) - Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 18, 2012
Pours deep orange-tinged mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention recedes leaving scant sheets to coat surface. Sweet bubblegum, oak and whiskey aromas. Sweet, thick oak upfront turning to creamy banana flambe before the lasting warm, bitter oak finish.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 iowaherkeye (2506) - Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, USA - JAN 12, 2012
750mL bottle, no date from Beertopia in Omaha, for >$20. My label states 10.3%. Slightly hazy brown with orange highlights, and a half finger beige head, creamy with pretty decent retention. Lotta bourbon in the nose, fairly phenolic and spicy. Do I get some acetone as well? That ain’t right. There are also some brown sugar toasted malt notes, tinge of chocolate. Flavor follows suit--yes, I still get the acetone--lotta spicy phenols again. The booze still seems a bit harsh. There is some sweetness--of the brown sugar lightly scorched toffee type, but not too much. Dry finish, bitterness was earthy and a little ashy, peaking at a 3-3 1/2. Big full body with low carbonation. This was not a winner for me.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 drpimento (1752) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 22, 2011
Poured with a medium sized off white, fine head and a little lace. Color was a slightly hazy amber, Aroma was malt, yeast, caramel, hop, solvents. Flavor what exactly like nose plus a little carbonic tang. Body and carbonation ok. Finish is like flavor and on the short side. No hint of alcohol.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 pineypower (1816) - Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA - DEC 4, 2011
Bottle, shared at CDC release. Pours out a nice darker copper color with a small white head. Aroma is of light caramel, dried fruits, oak, whiskey and light burning alcohol. Taste is caramel, toffee, bourbon, vanilla, oak and a little heat from the alcohol on the finish. Nice

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 phaleslu (3544) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - SEP 9, 2011
750 ml bottle from michael-pollack- thanks again, Pollack! Tried alongside a Black Betty and Melange a Trois. Pours a cloudy amber color with a small beige head. Aroma shows that yes, this was in whiskey barrels- big huff of whiskey, oak, vanilla, caramel, plums, and dates. Flavor somehow brings even more whiskey with a little warmth this time, along with vanilla, caramel, oak, dates, and some brown sugar. Medium-bodied, with a warming mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Wow, if you like whiskey you’ll like this. If not, stay away.
