4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 rangerred (201) - Johnson City, Tennessee, USA - FEB 9, 2012
2011 vintage poured int a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale snifter.
Appearance is a hazy dark ruby with a tiny head that fades to a thin ring around the glass.
Smells of fruit but a couple different kinds. I pick up some orange, grapefruit, and pineapple presumably from the hops but then also dark fruit; figs and raisins. Also some wood.
The taste starts out quite sweet with some light citrus coming in next, much like an Imperial IPA. There is then a transition to the darker fruits more typical in a Barleywine. There is some vanilla along with wood towards the finish. A fairly strong bitterness comes in at the end along with some pineapple. Finally there is a somewhat drying bitterness with hints of tobacco.
Overall this is a very complex and enjoyable beer. There is so much going on and it constantly changes as the beer warms. A sipper for sure kind of wish it came in something smaller than a 22oz bomber.
4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 ICEatALAMO (67) - Troy, Michigan, USA - FEB 9, 2012
Wow, great beer! The aroma is good, but not great, feel like the aroma does not do the beer quality justice. The taste is just great, not sure how else to put it. Stone has a homerun with this one. My only complaint is a slight bitterness in the aftertaste.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 SimonRoller (209) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - FEB 5, 2012
Bottle, pours hazy deep reddish with one finger off white head. Aroma is lots of malts, dark fruits, some hops and also some alcohol. Taste is malty, lots of caramel, hoppy citrus and bread. Big bitterness, medium-high sweetness, big body. Nice complex over the top beer.
4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 BcOneSeven (16) - Newville, Alabama, USA - FEB 5, 2012
Nice aroma. The hops are there, but not overly so. Surprisingly smooth going down, considering its brother! Balanced bitterness with and underlying sweetness. Pleasant citrusy aftertaste!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 stumpyiliz (5) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 4, 2012 does not count
Uber hoppy out of the bottle, popping the cap fills the room immediately with the pungent grapefruit and citrus smell this beer is so well known for. Hops are balanced with a ridiculous amount of grain to balance it out. Three bombers in one night will tunr you into the Double Bastard, no doubt about it.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 kryon (147) - SWEDEN - FEB 4, 2012
pours copper red to brown with medium and thick head
aromas of caramel malts, oak, sweet hops. some bready tones there as well.
starts out quite sweet, almost barley wine style, but in the end lifting it towards a fine bitter ending. alcohol is finely hidden in the bitter and sweet tones. fine tuned hops and malts makes this a very good ale.
